First Aid course...

I don't know if you've all kept your first aid training up to date - I hadn't and had a fantastic, though very intense and exhausting course today. I thought I was quite well-informed, but I was horrified at how much I don't know, both in terms of up to date first aid, but also odd facts:

That it's better to dial 112 than 999....

The average age of patients having their first heart attack is now in the low 30s

A lot of teenagers die every week from alcohol-related causes. Putting them in the recovery position with their airways clear would save most of them - so all teenagers should learn how to put someone in the recovery position.

Tequila slammers can cause strokes.

The ventolin inhaler my GP gave me when I had pleurisy would have prevented scarring to the bronchi - if he'd bothered to explain to me why I needed it and I'd used it.

I also managed to either bruise my mouth giving the dummy the kiss of life (my lung capacity is apparently unusually large!), or I'm allergic to the antiseptic wipes being used to clean the dummy between turns, as I now have dreadful purple marks all round my mouth, especially my lower lip. Anyone know any First Aid treatment for a bruised mouth? - My d. keeps laughing at me - she says I look as though I missed with the lipstick!

Seriously, if you have the chance to go on a Health and Safety emergency First Aid Course, and haven't done one recently, do take it up - it was really worthwhile.

Re: First Aid course...

Hi Val,

Thanks for that bit of info

It's been years since I last did a first aid course. I think I will be as horrified as you when I get round to booking myself into the courses at work.

With re to your lip...you could always colour in your top lip, then they would be matching and you wouldn't look so daft LOL

Re: First Aid course...

Perry, I can see you have me sussed... I ws hoping you might think I was 23 with a hunk in the background.....rather than a four year old with attitude!

If you have the chance do take a course - it was a BIG learning curve for me - so many of the things I thought were right weren't - and could be the difference between saving someone's life or losing them.

Re: First Aid course...

I work with pre-school children and have to do a first aid course every 3 years and even in that time things change. We have a really fit 1st aid instructor, (tall, dark Italian) and when he asks for volunteers to be bandaged up etc, all the women jump up to volunteer. Definately makes the course worthwhile
