Anyone suffer from bloating?
|
|
I think it's a combination of minor food intolerances and the dreaded "age thing" but my bloated tummy is reaching epic proportions! Has anyone found anything that helps, such as probiotics, prebiotics etc? I'm overweight anyway but could probably cope with that, but this large Alfred Hitchcock type tummy is getting me down! Any ideas ladies?

Hi need2know- I suffer from bloating too. I can link mine directly to food intolerances. I have lots, and as soon as I eat something that doesn't work with me I bloat. I use probiotics, supplements - you name it but the only thing that works is when I cut out all the things I react to. Dairy, glutens, sugar, fruit, nuts, soy, alcohol - they'll all do it to me. I really try to eat sensibly but if I cut out everything it leaves me with practically nothing to eat, so I eat as well as I can but have to eat some of the things that don't sit well or I'd starve. Maybe there's one thing that you are sensitive to that you could cut out? It really isn't easy but it might be worth it to cut out things one by one to see if it helps. I really sympathise!

Try cutting out anything with wheat in any form, and also yeast - you have to read labels very closely! Taking a probiotic is a good idea too.

I was allergy tested last year and apparently I react to wheat, dairy (which I already knew),coffee, potatoes and oranges. I cut them all out for about 6 weeks but didn't see a massive difference, unfortunately. I have had good results from something called Prebio 7 but only recently found out that heat kills them...and I used to take them with my morning coffee!! Duh!! Started taking a different pro/pre biotic yesterday so fingers crossed.

I find wheat and carbohydrates, alcohol and sugar has this effect on me. I went on the Food Doctor Diet recently and found it made a massive diffence to how flat my stomach was. There is wheat in the FD diet, but I cut out a lot of bread and tried to eat more rye.

Hmmm, interesting. Did you buy the book Sparkly? I too seem to be worse with carbs. I try to stay away from wheat if I can but now find I get bloated with oats too:( Low carb definitely works best for me for a flatter tum but also means I can't go to the loo so it's a vicious circle!

I agree with redhead about the wheat thing - and sadly it probably is an age thing! I found that carbs also added to the problem and instead of giving me energy actually made me sluggish.
My advice is to cut out the carbs and especially wheat (some yogurts contain wheat so it will mean reading the labels) and eat fresh fruit, veg and meat and drink lots of water. Nuts and dates will help with the loo situation .You don't have to give up coffee or tea but just cut it down and red wine in moderation is good for you -it contains antioxidants. Try this for 2 weeks and you should start to feel better with more energy and the bloating feeling disappearing and your tum flattening. With the extra energy you may even feel like toning it all up by doing sit-ups!!!

I am going to fly in the face of all. I also get bloating and have cut out bread and carbs but the best thing I have found for me is drinking plenty of water because if i do not my stomach will swell and I will get constipated. But the best thing I have discovered is "wheatgrass capsules" I know most of us cut out wheat when we have bloating but wheatgrass capsules are made from juicing wheat grass before it it grows more than 7-10 inchs high and is very beneficial to the digestive system. I suggest you google up Wheatgrass and read about its benefits, you will be surprised. daisy

Hi - need2know
I went to the doctor eventually and he said - not to put too fine a point - if your bowels work properly the 'gas' will not build up in your stomach. I went with that for a while and it worked, but just this week it has started again. I was trying to cut down to lose weight - it is as someone else said, a vicious circle and I also believe it is age related. I have just started on the priobotic drinks and acidophilous tabs from Holland and Barratt.
'Where 'ere you be - let your wind blow free - church or chapel - let it rattle!!!! ' Courtesy of OH - wouldn't you know... Good luck to us all - Jenny

Re: Anyone suffer from bloating?

I have suffered from truly dreadful bloating on and off for 30 plus years which is painful, urelenting, wrecks the look of a great outfit and can be really depressing. It's been called spastic colon, IBS, food sensitivity...you name it. But there is no ryhme or reason to it - it just comes and goes. sometimes I can eat anything and the tummy is as flat as a pancake and other times (like now) it just swells up and cramps no matter what I do.
Therefore, I have decided it might be hormonal and so along with my menopausal symptoms I am hoping it will disapear now I have started using my 'LadyCare' magnet thingy (please see the recent posting on 'Menopause') I will let you know how I get on although it can take up to 3 months to work apparently.

Hi Chelsea, I'm all for magnets and wear a magnetic bracelet and ring so would be very interested in the Ladycare one. Don't forget to tell me if it works!

I've suffered from IBS for several years and I find mint tea is very helpful - if it gets bad I cut out all ordinary tea and coffee.
My symptoms have been a lot better since I've been following the Flabuless Forumers rules, which mean that I eat less bread and virtually no sugar.

I too am a martyr to my bloating/IBS. Have you tried a gluten free diet? My shiatsu practitioner recommends peppermint tea or colpermin capsules and I also find some of the methods of massage she uses very helpful. Chewing food thoroughly before swallowing helps too as by doing this you're not swallowing air at the same time. Some fruit and veg can cause gas and bloating too but I guess it's just a case of trial and error in finding what suits each of us.

LadyCare update,
Well, I've been wearing it constantly since Sunday and maybe it's my imagination but the pain has all but gone - it started to go within half an hour. Sadly the tummy is still swollen but these things take time...
I will report back after a few months or sooner if I notice any specific improvements...

do you eat lots of non-complex carbs? (White bread, white pasta etc). This can cause bloating.
I've also heard mushrooms can cause bloating.

Hi, as an almost qualified allergy and nutritional therapist, have to pass the exams next month! Bloating is usually caused by candida in the gut. This is an overgrowth of yeast fungus. Taking probiotic will help a little but you need to kill the candida first and then take probiotic to repopulate the good bacteria. The probiotic has to be a very good one containing lactobaccilli and bifidobacterium at 4 million plus. Bio-acidophulus usually has this amount. The food allergies are caused by a depleted immune system because of the candida.Eating yeast and sugar will make it worse as candida thrives on these. Sugar cravings are candida craving. There are herbal preparations to kill candida but really the best way is to see an allergy therapist to find one that suits you and which foods are affecting you. Once you clear the candida most foods you will be able to eat again. Taking B vitamins will help your energy as candida takes your B vitamins. Good luck.
