Booking Holidays

Where do you think you get the best deal?

A friend told me they got a great deal by booking all the parts of their holiday independently but I often find when I look at hotel websites that the daily rate works out more than if I booked through an agent. I know they can get really good deals with the hotels. I've booked myself holidays previously where I have sourced the accomodation - generally self catering - and then made my own flight bookings and saved money but 'm not convinced this is always the best option.

So what do you think is the best way?

Re: Booking Holidays

Lots of travel companies are about to go bust like mine just did, so you are safest booking with a big tour operator like Thomson,Thomas Cook or First Choice as they actually own their airlines and have paid for the accommodation up front. If you book anything else such as on teletext make sure they are ATOL and ABTA bonded. This means if they go bust you will get the choice of your money back or can still travel. Also pay with a credit card and then your card issuer should give you the money back if you wanted. You can book direct yourself such as a Ryanair flight and the hotel direct but if your flight is cancelled and you can`t get another one for a few days you may not get your money back on a hotel booking.

any other scenarios please pm me for advice.

Re: Booking Holidays

I think it all depends on the type of holiday. Sometimes it is easier and just as cheap to do it independently but other times it is best to let an agent do all the work. What I do find though is even if you use and agent and book a package, browsing the internet first to get ideas and compare prices is very useful

It depends what you are booking. Do lots of research on the internet as well as in a Travel Agent such as Thomas Cook. If you are booking online, use your credit card to protect you if the company goes bust. Lots of travel companies have a web site as well as an actual store and these are often cheaper but provide the same peace of mind.
