Fabrics from 1950's / 60's -does anyone know what to do with them?

Whilst clearing out my dad's loft (to make way for the junk currently cluttering up downstairs lol!) I came across some old curtain material etc from my nan's house I think. The fabrics are in such distinctive prints that you just wouldn't see in the shops these days and must be 40 - 50 years old. It seems a shame to chuck them away but you wouldn't exactly be able to use them unless you were decorating a museum!

I have photograped them is there anywhere that I could send them do you know? I thought about the V&A but they would probably only want real designer stuff - these are good quality but my old Nan's pension didn't really stretch to Cristian Dior! Funnily enough, I saw fabrics on the antiques roadshow tonight but i think our stuff is down the other end of the scale from this.

Many thanks girlies

Hi Chelsea,If the fabric is still of good quality and not turned ripe, you might consider making up a patchwork quilt or if you are not so inclined, perhaps you know someone who is.

These types of quilts can look gorgeous with the mix of patterns and colours, plus tell a story of through the years.

E-bay is a possibility though if you just really want to be free of them.

If you check the selve edge of the fabric. The side, where it doesn't fray, there is usually the makers name of the fabric. Ebay is quite a good guide, I find, to the value of something like that, but you have to follow the sale by "watching" it right up until the end.

A charity shop is a good place to off load stuff you don't want anymore, if it is too good to throw away.

I too was going to suggest a parchwork quilt especially if these fabrics are cotton and of a similar weight. You could sell them on ebay or even donate them to a quilting group. In fact you could suggest that the group make a quolt to be raffled for your father's favourite charity if it didnt seem too cheeky.

Hi Chelsea

I use vintage fabric in my designs, mainly from the 40's and 50's. I buy a lot from a lady called Donna Flower. You could try contacting her via Donna Flower.com or her blog the fabric of my life as she trades solely in vintage fabrics and has a large number of buyers. She is really friendly and approachable so would be pleased to hear from you. Tell her Mrs Bobo Bun put you on to her if you call her as that's how she knows me.

Hope this helps
Bobo

Hi Chelsea, I think that Bobo gave you the best possible advise and runs a bit along the lines that I would have..... Vintage and retro, are IN!!! Clothes, furniture, materials, accessories, etc. There are lots of people out there who are looking just for this kind of thing.
Ebay too is always a good place to start.

I will have a look at that site Bobo, and make a note of it..... most interesting!!

Thank you girls - you are wonderful. Loo is going to have a look at the fabrics for me and I will definitely take a look at that website + ebay.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Have you thought about contacting the Chelsea College of Fashion? They might like some for their resources.

No I hadn't thought of that Foxie - but it is a good idea (after all, the college was obviously named after me!) I will look into it.

Thank you for the suggestion and Happy New year to you, Mr. Foxie and the Foxie Juniors!
