Can anyone suggest a carpet cleaner that is low priced & that works?

Our carpets need a good clean but the cost of a carpet cleaning firm to come to our house and do them all was over £170.

I did think about hiring a carpet cleaner but this isn't cheap either and then you have to buy the cleaning solutions!

As both our kids are now away at university I was thinking this is the ideal time to get the carpets cleaned.

The other day I saw a carpet cleaner on sale in our local hard ware shop. It was a Vax Rapide Upright Carpet Washer V-022 Only £59.99. It said on the sales blurb it was previously nearer the £100 mark.

I have no idea what it is like to use or if it does a good job. Then there is the cleaning solutions which are bound not to be cheap.

Can any of your ladies suggest a good model and make that does the job well and which is keenly priced?

Surely cleaning has got to be cheaper than buying new carpets?

Hi ButterflyBlue.
Well it doesn't appear any other woman and forum ladies clean their carpets!
May be they get in a man that does

My main carpet is mid brown with a hint of beige so no where near as bad as plain beige but with two cats and two teenagers in the house over the last 10 years it is in need of a full clean and the beige is no longer beige.

I am disappointed at the lack of feed back on my question raised here on buying a carpet washers.

I don't really want to spend out £60 only to find the washer does a poor job and costs £15+ to buy the cleaning solution.
I've just had an idea BB. How about you and me sharing the cost and sharing the Vax carpet cleaner

Re: Can anyone suggest a carpet cleaner that is low priced & that works?

Would have been a good idea DBVC except for the distance between us. When we moved I got a man in to do lounge, dining room, stairs and landing. A leaflet had been put through the door offering half price cleaning. I think I paid about £20 for the lounge. The dining room and stairs cost £35 but that was a couple of years ago.

I have tried the one you hire but certainly not as good as getting the man in.

Re: Can anyone suggest a carpet cleaner that is low priced & that works?

My son has used Rug Doctor this weekend on their cream carpets and it has worked a treat, not sure how much it was to hire, and you have to buy the solutions, but it worked. Hired machine from Homebase.

My friend bought the Vax, and said okay if carpets newish but not so good on carpets that had been down a long time.

Re: Can anyone suggest a carpet cleaner that is low priced & that works?

Thanks Stella and brandyqueen.
I guess it may be worth contacting our local carpet cleaning business again. May be they have a specal offer this time of year I will check them out again.
While chatting to the lady next door on Friday this week she offered to lend me her old carpet cleaner but I think it may be far to heavy and I don't want to risk breaking it.

I can not use a fine powder like you Stella as it affects my asthma. Instead I use shake and vac once or twice a year. It makes the carpets smell nice but I find it doesn't remove the years of ground in dirt.
We have two cats and two kids so the dirt has built up. Not helped by the odd spill and a cake throwing occassion. The cake throwing was done by me I may add
But it was fun if a bit messy and I got most of it in the persons face !

An update for those interested Ref Carpet cleaner low priced

"Eureka!" An Update.
Thanks to all those who replied here and also thsoe who Pm with ideas on this.
After over a week of searching the internet and local shops for deals on carpet washers I found one!
Not only was I looking for the best price I was also reading reviews to find out which machine would best suit us and our requirements.
Finally I found one that did fit all our requirements.
More improtantly I found a place that delivers for free and includes cleaning solutions in the package with the carpet washer.
My sister and her family has just said yes to coming to stay with us for the new years eve and new years day. They are coming with my niece and my great neice, baby Keira, who has just started to

Ref Carpet cleaner low priced?

Final update it arrived on Friday

The first inter net company I placed an order with phoned me the middle of this week to say they couldn't get my carpet cleaner as it was out of stock! I just knew at that low price it was too good to be true!

Not to give up as I need to clean my carpets I went back and looked at the VAX web site.

Low and behold they had just discounted the next model up to less that half pirce and with free delivery and AAA carpet cleaning solution plus a power pet brush which will come in very handy with my two fluffy white cats Only kidding honest

Re: Ref Carpet cleaner low priced?

Hiya,
Just seen the posts on carpet cleaners. Did your Vax work? I bought one for £99 also well discounted and have tried it once so far in the hall - worst place. Did work well for a general clean but it's hard to get very old ground in stains out. My carpets are also beige/fawn and have been through a family with 2 dogs and now us with a dog. Lots of stains and blobs although the carpets themselves are generally still reasonably good. Would be interested to hear your experience. I am going to have another go in New Year with other areas.

Re: Ref Carpet cleaner low priced?

Hi Tilly
I am very pleased with the Vax V-028PET Rapide PowerJet Pet carpet cleaner and the results.
I did clean one or two areas with the pre soaking/cleaning fluid supplied with the cleaner as it said it was best to do this on ingrained dirt.
I vacummed the carpets twice before I cleaned them as both our cats have white fluffy fur coats. Every day there is a handful of fur and if left it would build up turning the carpets white.
The water used was almost the same amount sucked back up apart from it being almost black!
The carpets were touch dry within 12 hours and fully dry after 24 hours.
Now my family and friends know I have a carpet cleaner many are asking to borrow it!
