Can you cook a Turkey overnight ?

No it's not a joke,my friend's husband says he always cooks the Xmas turkey overnight, puts bird in oven at bedtime on low heat and it's ready for lunchtime!! Not an oven where you can programme it to come on either. Hmmm, any thoughts ?

I always put the turkey on on Christmas Eve around midnight. By eight o'clock its done to a tee - low heat, absolutely lovely!

Always use to. Went on after Midnight Mass and wake up on Christmas morning to the smell of cooking. Turkey or large chicken went on a no2 gas. Thanks has brought back some childhood memories

I can't cook a turkey at all - the first one I ever cooked was the first year we were married 1970 and it was AWFUL --- put me off for life!!!!!!!

When I was a lass my mum always did goose for Christmas

Every year I cook my turkey overnight on Christmas Eve,and then awake to the delicious aroma wafting up the stairs.

It is always put on very low Gas Mark 1 and by the time I need it,the bones just slide out and it is lovely and juicy.
Yum

Christmas Eve afternoon,I bake sausage rolls and mince pies while listening to the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, enjoying at the same time either a glass of wine or sherry.

I've heard that it is dangerous to cook the turkey on a very low heat as the oven doesn't get to a high enough temperature to kill any bacteria in the bird.

Saying that, my mum used to cook it overnight when I was young and we never suffered any ill effects.

Have to agree with Mangetout..the oven doesnt get hot enough to kill any bacteria.

I always do mine like that-really low all night and then turn it up when I am up and about the next morning. Think that deals with the bacteria too. No-one ever been ill to date after our Christmas dinner. I also cook every other kind of meat, poultry by doing it long and low during the morning/day and a blast when everything else is ready. Always end up having really tender meat whatever the cut.
