Washing Machines
|
Just back from my holiday and because of the glorious weather, have managed to get all of the washing done (won't think about the ironing yet!). However, my 8 year old washing machine leaks every time we use it and I'm now getting a bit fed up of constantly mopping up the kitchen floor! Has anyone got any recommendations for a new washer? We don't need built-in tumble drying, but a fast spin speed would be good.

I wanted a Bosch but ended up with a Hotpoint as it was the only one which would fit the tight space I had. Been very pleased with it. Anything over 1200 spin is good.

No, I'd never heard of them either but I liked their philosophy and the machine is great. It made light work of the throw we use on the bottom of the bed which the other machine decided was too much to cope with, leaving me with a soggy heap that took daaaaaays to dry.

Hi Andicat, my 14 year old Zanussi machine is getting a bit temperamental so I've just ordered a Miele machine which comes with a 10 year manufacturer's parts and labour guarantee. It's expensive but I'm hoping it will be money well spent. I like my appliances to last.

Hi Andicat,
I used to sell washing machines etc. and I vowed as soon as I could afford it I'd have Miele. They do cost, but you get what you pay for.

One thing I did not look at the last time I bought a washing machine was which way the door opened. I chose the machine - had it installed and then realised that the door opened the opposite way to my previous one which makes it awkward as it is in a tight space at the end of my porch and the door opens towards me and there is not the space to stand in fromt of the machine. But apart from that it is an AEG and still going strong 11 years down the road.

I bought a new washing machine a couple of months ago, and did a bit of research beforehand as I had problems with my two previous ones.

I finally decided on a Miele and i'm really pleased with it, definately worth the extra cost. It is very stable and extremely quiet even on a 1600 spin with a full load of towels. If you decide to go for one, check out their website as they offer free extended parts and labour warranties on certain models that you send off for after you've bought it (the shop you buy it from may not tell you this)

Hi andicap, I'm really delighted with my recently purchased Zanussi Aquacycle washing machine with 1600 spin. It also gives me the option to wash at 30 degrees (couldn't find the symbol) which my old machine didn't do.

I bought a Bosch when I moved here 3 years ago and no probs so far. My best machine was one that was from the Electricity Board and badged as an "Electra" - think it was actually a Hotpoint. It lasted 17 years and I only changed it when I got fed up with taking the back off to re-fit the belt.

I'd love a miele but when our old one gave up last year (it was over 20 years old and had done the rounds - inherited it from my gran when our previous one leaked too much) I went to the electrical store in our village and basically bought what the manager recommended for my needs (not the most expensive they sold and he price matched the internet - not bad for a small shop). I think (can't remember without looking) it's a Hotpoint Aqualis (or something like that). Not too complicated (OH can drive it), will do a 30 degree wash, takes at least 7kg of washing and has a 1200 spin speed option. The only thing I don't like is that it takes twice as long to wash as the old one but I'm told that's the way of the world these days - less water, less electric but much more time. Still it means I can put the washing on Saturday morning, pop out to the shops for an hour or so and be back around the time the wash finishes.

Another vote for Miele!
It really washes well and is dependable. My children bring their washing home with them as they say my Miele washes better than their machines.

Ive got an Indesit 1600 spin, cheap and good.
By the way Good Housekeeping magazine confirmed that bacteria is not killed on a 30 degree wash, whereas they are on a 40 degree wash.

Yes I think it's best to wash underwear, towels and sheets at 40, anything else 30 will do. Well that's what I do anyway.

I use 50 degree washes most of the time except for whites and tea towels which get a 90 degree wash.

I once inherited an AEG washing machine in a house I bought. Even though it was very very old it was the best washing machine I ever had. However a washing machine engineer told me a couple of years ago that the newer machines are not of the same standard; I don't know if that's true.
I don't know about Miele washing machines but in the house I mentioned above I inherited a Miele dishwasher. I have had 2 other makes since, in other houses, and none is anything like the Miele in terms of cleaning quality, quietness and overall efficiency. We are thinking of replacing our kitchen, and if we do I will buy a Miele dishwasher regardless of price. I would guess the washing machines are of same quality.
