Bad Language

I have noticed recently there have been a few posts that seem to contain bad language and swearing. I am no fuddy duddy and am known to let one slip from time to time. I have observed, on the forum, that when we want to say something using such language we usually put the first and last letters of the swear word, and fill in the gaps with asterisks. It gets the point across without offending anyone. Can I suggest this is how we should swear on the forum in future please? Do any other forum members prefer this way of using expletives?

I think you are spot on with this. I'm no prude either, I stand on the football terraces and chant with the blokes, but feel the old saying time and place are appropriate here. Even if people swear in their normal lives, we still need to remember some people find it offensive and respect that. Anyway I think filling the gaps in words with asterisks has a bit more oomph. So count me in Jewels am with you on this

Yes Jewels I'd prefer to see the asterisks too - like you the odd swear word has been known to pass my lips in the heat of the moment, but I think we should all try and keep them off the forum.

My dad always used to tell me that nice ladies didn't swear and always left something to the imagination.

I agree with you ladies over the use of bad language on the forum and any where to be honest but please folks not on the W&H forum please, use *** and we will get the point.
Today while out my OH and I went past a group of teenager boys and girls.

The bad and foul language that we heard as we passed near by was terrible. Sadly it appears to be this type of young persons day to day and common language.
Thank goodness we are not all like this in this respect.

Now **** off !!!

I agree, i've only joined in this last week and have noticed a few. however i did refer to the weather here as p'ing down - does that count. or perhaps i should have said raining. but p'ing down sounds better and raining takes too long to write. i cant be bothred to use caps as i type all day for a living and i cant be bothered to do it at night too...... ok i'll shut up - oops was that bad too?

I have noticed when looking on the forum this evening that there is one post in particular where the language is absolutely appalling. I'm no angel myself in that I swear occasionally, but I would definitely prefer to see asterisks rather the whole word.

I put a post on recently telling a troll to go away in 2 words. The first word was all asterixed out, leaving the degree of language to the reader, and the second was off. The post was deleted by the administrator before anyone had a chance to reply. That was only in the last few weeks so how come they are all slipping through now?

"Centuries" ago I used to work in an all male environment, with roughnecks, and the language I used to hear was to say the least very colourful....

Result: I don't blanch easily anymore. And if I nowadays want to make an on the spot profound exclamation, I am not going to come over all sanctimoniously prissy and prude, and primly say "oh sugar!"..... People who know me who start to worry.... So, yes, I have no compunctions about using certain language, and being once again stuck in a male environment, I am once again confronted with that language..... Does it bother me? Nope!
BUT...... It sure bothers, and in fact shocks me when these utterances come out of the mouths of children!!!

And amongst adults, it depends under what circumstances, and how these utterances are made.... if you get my drift....?? And that is the same here on the forum. Sometimes something is really so enfuriating, and we need to express our deepest feelings..... and I think that a letter (or two) with ****** in between, or a string of *%Ł"~?Ł&$^Ł" also pretty well conveys the message, don't you think...?
And, the meanings of words do change..... I was discussing with my friend yesterday how language evolves and changes, and how the original meanings get lost in the mists of time. In Shakespearian days, a little sh*t was a young girl!!! And we all know what it's now.....!!!
I do not want to see the F-word out full here either, and that is ditto with some other words, and ***** etc makes up beautifully for 'm

And in case some may wonder what a roughnecks are, they are offshore gas and oil drilling platform workers, be it the supervisor or the lowliest worker.....

Not long ago on this forum a thread went into the virtues of the 'F' word. People i least expected were saying what a wonderful release it is to use it sometimes and the empowerment you feel when telling someone to F off. I personally don't get offended by such words, but are some words more acceptable or less offensive than others?. Some words used down south we think are tame but i have heard they have a much worse meaning up north.

In the post that I was referring to, the words b***y, p**s, c**p and a**e all appear in a post at the begining of a thread and all the words appear without asterisks!!

Personally I think that most of these words are acceptable with the asterisks but NOT without!!!!!

I wasn't referring to any specific post,and would like to make it clear I was not implicating any individual just speaking generally. However if you are saying the word bloody should have asterisks in it then sorry that's a step too far for me. That word is so tame it is used on tv programmes pre watershed.

Dizeeblonde, there was one post a couple of days ago that was a particularly good example of bad language, so I referred to it in my post. I would agree with you that the word b****y is not particularly offensive, although personally speaking I would prefer to see asterisks.

Its W&H's view that really counts here!!

Jane, that's fine but I hadn't seen that post, so don't know who or what it is. I just wanted to make it clear as it wouldn't be fair of me to give an opinion on something I hadn't read. If I do chance across it I'm sure I would be of the same opinion as you. I was just being a little careful in case I started ww3, in the light of recent events.

Given that, although this is a community of (hopefully) friendly people, we are not friends in the way that we can judge how far we can go with language. If we thought about the forums as a dinner party at a friend's house with people we hadn't met before, we might moderate our language to a degree which is universally acceptable.

I've probably been swearing my head off. I have no idea if I am the mystery foul-mouthed one...... but the fact I haven't noticed anyone else's posts causing me any offence is rather damning!

someone tell me where to look for all this swearing. you'Re making me paranoid.....

actually I do use asterisks. I do try to anyway.

if my posts have used too many naughty words. sorry. my OH complains I swear too much. again, I blame my (previous) work environment, in which having hide like a rhino and a capacity for coping with very filthy language is a definite advantage.

anyway, again, if it was me.... S*RRY!!!

Hello, back from a week end away. I started this post so feel I should make a further comment. I am SO used to swearing as OH is a farmer and farm workers are notorious BIG TIME swearers (probably where I picked it up) but what I find unnecessary is swearing in "type". If we, for instance drop something heavy on our toes we are expected to swear loudly, but in "type" when we have time to think about it, surely asterisks avoid offence to those who may be offended. What I find UNNECESSARY is swearing in ordinary conversation. As I said before I am not a prude but I just think it can be left out if typing a message or if it is needed to express a strong opinion then asterisks will suffice.
Wildflowerchild if you swear in type I hadnt noticed !!!!

One of the men I worked with in the past was a notorious F-work user!! If it wasn't every third, then our ears were "lucky" to hear it every fourth word!! He actually wasn't aware of this at all, when we said something about it.... Sorta blushed and apologised..... He was a rather nice fellow, and a very conscientous and serious professional, but that F-word kept cropping up like rising damp......

When I loose my rag.... or drop something on the floor.... or my foot for that matter.... or something angers or upsets me then I can employ colourful language..... but not in everyday normal conversation.... As for bl***y and d*mn, etc., although I do use the *** in the first, because I've seen others here using it, I certainly don't see why it would it necessary for the second.....
Do you think I could get away with d*mn without the *..... like in very angrily "my d*mned bl***y washer/drier died, and I am stuck with piles of dirty and wet laundry..... AAAARGGGHHH!!!!" What do you think????

For a bit of fun why dont we all grade swear words in our opinion, on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the least offensive and 10 the most offensive.

I know somebody suggested that this was a 'witch hunt' on another thread but it is not!!!

Why would it be?????

Apart from any other consideration, some of us have young impressionable children who might one day peep over our shoulders when we're on the forum and see a nasty word that we don't want them to look at!

This is a Woman & Home forum after all!!

I'm all for asterisks anyway.
I get embarrassed reading the naughty words, and films with too much of the 'f' word in I generally turn off.

I'm no prude, however, and I have been known to issue forth some expletives when really roused, but not generally.

It all comes down to the way in which we wish to be perceived, doesn't it ?/

Dear ladies,

I was just typing a PM to somebody and when I pressed the continue button I noticed that the naughty word I used was edited out. If this is the case, then it means no more swearing on the forum as the word is edited out automatically!!!

So as an experiment I am going to use a swear word here to see what happens.

But it doesn't work for these words because when I press continue they are not edited out so I had to place the asterisks in the words myself.

I wonder why it works for some words but not for others

Thank you W&H for looking at this. Can you also auto edit the above naughty words and any others you can think of as well please?
