Tearfulness and simvastatin

I'm not usually a "down person" (as opposed to genuine depression), but the last few weeks I've been hovering on the verge of tears for no apparent reason.

It seems to coi-incide with taking simvastatin. And a few other symptoms too.

I've stopped taking it, and feel a lot better.

But..I don't want to be a scare monger, and I know that I may be taking other health risks by not taking it. I will go back to the doctor to reassess the risks.

Hpowever I do feel so much better, and I know that the depression is not "me" but the drugs.

It just proves depression is a chemical thing, drug induced as in my case, or drug induced as in natural hormone imbalance.

Hello Wispa,

Sorry to hear your still suffering......after taken simvastin tablets......it is best to see your doctor as they may have help in another way, does it run in your family? as mine does.

I'm off to doctors next week to see if I can have a lower dose, as I said in your other thread...they did not suit my mom.

Mine is 40mg and I have read good and bad about them

I too take Simvastin 40mg. My cholesterol is now 3.5 on it. when not taking it it was 5.3. I always thought as long as cholesterol was below 5.0 it was ok but the GP has just told my OH that he needs to get his to 4.0.

It seems to me that al the doctors, cardiologists, specialists etc have their own views and ideas on these tablets. I hear so many different ideas from people that there is obviously no "normal" and conclusive views. Again like so many things it is all open to the individuals opinions.

There was a post yesterday where a lady was told by her cardiologist that as long as she took the aspirin that was more important than the statin! My cardiologist said it was important not to stop the statin! Me - I would love to stop taking it as I did not feel that my cholesterol was a major problem AND my andiogram showed there was no blockage in my arteries and the furring was consistent with someone of my age and growing up in the 60's with no low fat products around. So why did I need to go on them?

I, like Wispa, am extremely tearful a lot of the time and it really bugs me. Now I am having some muscular problem with my right leg. After hearing all the views on these tablets I think I will be going back to GP next week and having a wee little chat.

I have been on statins 40mg for some time now and suffer from the tearful episodes too - didn't connect with the drug but now am beginning to wonder - tears even come now at the drop of a hat and it is so embarrassing - more information would be good .

karalady1.................. Oh I am so glad that someone else is having the same problem as me. I have always been someone who cries quite easily at upsetting things but now I am crying at anything.

When Federer won the French Open and broke down I was sitting in lounge with a waterfall falling in my lap!!! Over a tennis match..............come on I mean!!!

Then on Sunday when they were giving the speeches at the end of Wimbledon I was in tears...........mind you I also cried when they went on court and the crowd erupted with clapping!!!!

Stupid woman and so bloody annoying........................ it is now getting embarrassing like you say.

I take it too....but I am not tearful....maybe I am just lucky!!!
Have been on 40mg for a year following a TIA....my cholestral has always been good and now is very low indeed.
Hope you get it sorted.

I'm not tearful.....on 40gm too....been to see doctor and he still said not to go on a lower dose as my cholestral is still not low as it should be....it was 8 now just below 6...have had this problem for about 10yrs now and I never eat fat and not over weight but as I said before it runs in my family

I am obviously very lucky as I have been on 40g of Simvastatin for years, with no effects at all.

I don't really take it for cholesteral as that could of been sorted with diet, it wasn't that high, but I got a fatty blockage in one of my eyes and they treat that as if you have had a stroke, so I have to take it for ever and a day, plus asprin, which I'm not taking at the moment as one of my other tablets reacted with it and I was covered in bruises.............Such is life !!..

Worth a visit to the docs though ladies, if you think it is affecting you.

Well it is nice to see that 40mg Simvastatin is quite normal. Apart from the tearfulness I have no other side effects. Before I started on them my cholesterol was 5.6. Now it is 3.5 which is excellent. I am on it because of my coronary spasm but all main arteries are not blocked just some small "branch" ones.

Perhaps the tearfulness is because I am a bit low!!!!! I have to say that although I hate taking tablets the ones I am on now all seem to be working together quite nicely and I am definitely feeling heaps better than I did a few months ago.

So ............... if it is working I won't mess with it. 10 weeks now without having to call ambulance and go into hospital. A record for me since last November. It has taken a lot of worry and stress away from me and the family now that it seems it is well under control.

I found that taking them in the morning rather than at night was better. Taking them at night gave me really bad nights. Not nightmares really but really dark dreams.

That was aslo when my sleepless nights started. I swopped. Dont get the dark dreams but still have sleepless nights.

I also had leg pains - still do. Had some blood tests twice but both came back clear and they cannot seem to find out what the cause is.

I think, like you ladies, I am going to go back. I dont think it does any harm to have an MOT . HAVE to have one on our cars, why not our bodies.

I went back to the doctor, who admitted tearfulness and depression is a well-known side effect. But simvastatin is the cheapest drug fpor lowering cholesterol, so the one most commonly prescribed.

As for leg pain, I took CQ10 on the advice of a friend, and never had any leg pain. Might be worth a try.

I'm going to try some alternative remedies to lower my cholesterol - my choice.. If it doesn't work, the doctor has said he will prescribe some other drug

I stopped taking simvastatin because of the tearfulness and generally feeling down, I started eating everything that claims to lower cholesterol and low and behold they work and I have never felt better, its only now I realise just how miserable I had been feeling on the pills and how ill I had been feeling, my Dr. is very pleased and is more than happy to let me carry on the way I am.
