A thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Has anyone read this book. I thought it was fab. I didn't cry I wept.It tells the story of Afghanistan as a country through it's different political regimes and the story of it's people in particular the lives of two women. It is shocking and sad. The world is shaped by the men within it and depending on their morals and ethics and the women and children are at their mercy be it in a family setting or a government setting. I have never been so moved to write about books before and I can't profess to be that much of a reader but this I feel is excellent and will long live with me. Denise

Hi Denise1, yes OH got it for me last weekend. I read it ini two days. Fantastic read. As you say shocking and sad and depressing to think that some women still may live this sort of life today.
Did cry a little at the ending. I wonder if it was a true story or maybe based on actual people the author knew.

An amazing book - thought the Kite Runner by the same author couldn't be bettered but this is fantastic- the woman's viewpoint so sensitively and touchingly portrayed by this wonderful male author.
I think I was too stunned to cry - it certainly made me think and anguish over the harsh reality of life for many in Afghanistan. Not enough superlatives to describe this book. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Similar to the effect of Half of a Yellow Sun which we read last year in Book Club.

Is this one of Richard & Judys book club reads? If it is I looked at it in book shop thanks for recommendation will try it. I was called reading this afternoon but been on this forum ages.

I agree this book was brilliant. I read it in two days as well (couldn't put it down) & then an hour after finishing went to see the film of the Kite Runner. I could visualise the setting of A Thousand Splendid Suns so well after seeing the film & both stories have stayed with me for weeks.
I agree jayra it is exactly the same effect as reading Half of a Yellow Sun & I have often said that to people who ask me about the books in the library where I work.
Rosie, yes it is one of Richard & Judy's this year.

I'm looking forward to seeing "The Kite Runner" and thanks for the recomendation of "Half a Yellow Sun" I'll definately read this one. My OH read it too he is more of a reader than I am and he highly recommends it from a male point of view, I think he was shocked by the way the women were allowed to be treated and was quite ashamed of the men as part of his species. It has provoked many discussions and conversations and still is. I'm pleased to know you all had similar reactions. Denise

I thought Kite Runner was brilliant. I shall definitely get A thousand Splendid Suns to take to read on my holiday to Oman this Easter. Any other recommendations?

I loved A Thousand Splendid Suns, and have not read Kite Runner yet. I told absolutely everybody (who I thought would be interested) about this book. It was a book that stayed with me for weeks after, and whilst reading it I couldn't wait to get to bed to read the next chapter. (As you can tell from the lateness of this post-my current read is nowhere near as good)

Am two-thirds of the way through this book and have had to tear myself away to start cooking! What a story..... I broke my heart reading Kite Runner, and he's done it again. I am so grateful to be living as a free woman.

A very difficult read, but so moving and thought provoking. The quotation that has stayed with me is "Like a compass needle points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman"... That thread runs throughout the novel - and it is interesting how the different characters seem to embody this thought.

I thought Khaled Housseini couldn't possibly write another good book after The kite Runner but he did! 1000 Splendid suns is so powerful and thought provoking and I was so moved by it. I feel that I am so lucky to be a woman living in Britain -difficult to imagine life in Afghanistan for women. I think he writes about women so well - I will reread it again soon as it has been chosen for one of my book groups. I would recommend it to everyone.
Janswansea - you asked for other recommendations - have you read Shadow of the Wind? it's another very good book. And how about Atonement?

Finished it! Thought it was such an amazing book, could not put it down towards the end. Such cruelty and hardship. Thoroughly recommend this although not my 'normal' type of book. Every woman should read it!
