Help! I'ts my turn to choose ....

the next book! Has anyone got any suggestions for a really good holiday read - as we are coming up to holiday time, I thought I would choose something which would make good "by the pool" reading - in other words, nothing too heavy! But - also something which would make for good discussion. Look forward to hearing your ideas!

Have just finished The House at Riverton. Its about a 90 year old telling the story of her time in service and the events leading up to a mysterious 'event'. Wont say anymore - just that it was mostly enjoyable though I wanted there to be more of an ending. Glad I read it though.

Now started on Dover Beach. a novel about the area in wartime. As I was born and bred in Dover its wonderful to hear mention of places I know. Written by the chap who wrote The Virgin Soldier.

Jodi Picult - My Sisters Keeper is also good.

Not sure if it is still in print but my all time favourite that I read many moons ago as a teenager was The L-Shaped Room by Lynne Reid Banks. There is also the sequel Two is Lonely. There may even be a third book but I can't remember the name.
Will browse the bookshelves - it will be around, I hate parting with books that I love.

If you are not averse to reading children's books then I recommend the Vampirates series by Justin Somper. It's very in keeping with the current trend for vampire based stories but it is a great idea and a jolly good swash buckling romp!

Hi there, its a big responsibility isnt it? And can be quite anxiety provoking because as sure as eggs are eggs there will be mixed reviews about whatever you decide on.
I belong to 3 book clubs (sad, I know!) and the book that has had a good response from them all is Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.
If anyone had told me that I would have enjoyed a book that has a circus at its core I would never have believed them!
It has a wonderful life story, a strong romance, excitement and ticked all the right boxes for me....
I suppose that its been a long time since I read a book that has a cracking story and this is it.
It is inexpensive online at the usual outlets and is available on the high street too so its easy to get a hold of. Some of the copies even have notes for discussion for book clubs in the back of the book.
Perhaps have a look at some of the reviews of it online.
If it doesnt strike a chord with you then maybe some other forum readers might like it...a great feel good read.

I will definitely try Water for Elephants; sounds a bit different.

My new favourite book, which I'm buying everyone as a present just now, is The Observations by Jane Harris. It's the story of Bessy, a maid in a big country house where something strange is going on..Lots of twists and turns and humour too. Really recommend it.

Re: Help! I'ts my turn to choose ....

Just wanted to say a huge thankyou for all these suggestions - they all sound great and I am making a list so that I can hopefully make a decision within the next couple of weeks! There's just too much to read and too little time - I need a holiday I think as I can easily get through 4 books during 2 weeks around the pool! Keep these suggestions coming - I'm sure others find it helpful too!

Thought you would all like to know that I have chosen "Water for Elephants" as our next Book club read. I have made a note of all other suggestions and hope to work my way through them in the near future. So, thanks once again - I will let everyone know what we all thought of it when we meet in September.
