This pacey thriller hooked me on page one. It’s a breakneck speed read with more twists and turns than the final of Strictly Come Dancing. Decent, law abiding John Merron receives a phone call from a friend, screaming for help. The last words he hears are his home address. He scoops up his children and runs from the house not knowing that within minutes he will be hurtled into a world of violence. He will be very lucky to escape with his life…and where is his wife? This book should come with a health warning. Pick up this book late at night and sleep becomes unimportant. I stayed awake until 3 am to finish it and could not put it down. Even if George Clooney had been giving me a foot massage I probably wouldn’t have noticed ! This would be an exciting distraction from Christmas preparations. I am definitely asking Santa for Simon Kendrick’s other books.

Blimey, Lynne, it must have been good! Tell you what, though. If Gorgeous George turns up to give you a foot massage, but you'd rather read your book, lob him over my way, will you. Now, for me, THAT would be an exciting distraction from Christmas preparations!

Hi, I have now read all Simon Kernick books. excellent books, all excellent - also stayed awake in bed for hours reading. The only trouble:- 1. Not long enough 2. Does not write enough books to keep me happy. One of the best authors around. |

Hi, Jill have you looked at The book Depostory.co.uk on the web they offer free postage on all books. Which is particularly good when living abroad. I live in France and they are quick in dispatching books. Well worth a look, if they have not got the book you want then they inform you to contact amazon. |

I finished reading this book this afternoon and I must say I did enjoy it. However, I wondered at times whether the author had his tongue firmly in his cheek. There was the odd rather flippant remark made by various characters throughout the story which didn't really seem to fit in with the rather sordid goings on which made me think that Mr Kernick was having a bit of a laugh! Nothing wrong with that, though, and the opening pages of the book were electrifying and made you want to keep going even though some parts, I thought, were not terribly well written. Thanks, Lynne, for the recommendation. |

Definitely not a modern classic and I totally agree that some parts aren't 'well written' but for sheer distraction value and entertainment he really is up at the top of the tree in this particular genre. Saraw can you believe that I have got all the others wrapped in Xmas paper , from me to me, sitting staring at me shouting "read me, read me" and I havent weakened? Yet! |
||||||||
|
|
|||||||

Yes, Lynne, I do agree - it kept me entertained until the early hours of several mornings! You are so good not to have weakened yet and opened your presents to yourself! I just wouldn't be able to resist! Enjoy them when the time comes! |

Thanks saraw - great tip will check it out. At the moment I have stuff sent to an english address by Amazon for free then it's brought over by van (they stock a local shop with UK products)for a few euros. The worst thing is having to wait for my orders between trips. Lucky Moco getting it secondhand - unfortunately not around at my local boot fair. |

Sorry to be the one to put a bit of a downer on this particular book, but good as it is in terms of storyline, I think his style of writing is rather uninteresting. I'm a big fan of Mark Billingham - I don't know if any of you are familiar with his books. Apparently he is (or was) a standup comedian and I think this shows in his writing. Although he deals with rather graphic and gruesome goings-on there is a lot of humour injected his books. |

Soooooo! glad i keep a book by computer ready to write down all the recommendations people post on this site. Has anyone read any of his others? and are they worth a read? Although i will have to read somethig completely different now before i read another crime novel. |
