What are you reading at the moment?

What are you reading at the moment, and what for you makes a good book?

I have just finished a book by Josephine Cox called the 'Songbird', and I highly recommend this page turner of a book, it was difficult to put down.

I am now reading Stephen King 'The Long Walk' if your into Stephen King then this is another truly great read.

I love the fact that you can escape into the book and I have a very varied collection of books I read.

Is it the same for you?

Hi Jade - I am reading The Bookseller of Kabul by ASne Seierstad as the book of the month for the book club which had its inaugural meeting earlier this month. I am really enjoying it.

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

I've heard of the Bookseller, I think it's a popular choice for Book Clubs.

I am in the process of setting a book club up myself in West Sussex and looking at books to get started on.

Happy reading x

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Hi Jade

I am reading 'Moby Dick' - a classic I never got round to reading before. It's an odd read but I am enjoying it. Melville is a bit like Dickens in that he has quite a funny way of describing things but there is a lot of scientific info about whaling in the 19th Century and it is a bit gory! I'm also reading a book about coding in the 2nd world war - it's my work book, I keep it there and read it at lunchtimes. I've just finished 'When Will There Be Good News' by Kate Atkinson. I couldn't put it down,it was AMAZING!. I haven't read any of her books since 'Behind The Scenes at the Museum' which I loved, but I hated her second, 'Human Croquet' then gave up on her. However, after this last one I'm going to go back and read some more of hers that I have missed.

Good luck with your book club. Whereabout are you in W Sussex? I am in Horsham.

Sha

I'm reading 'Winter in Madrid' C J Sansom - progress is slow. Have also been reading 'Constitutional' Helen Simpson, short stories, really enjoyed them.

Sha whats you book about coding in the 2WW, is it 'Between Silk and Cyanide'? I found that a fascinating read.

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Hi Sha,

The Book Club is Horsham and surrounding areas, I live 7 miles out of Horsham but it's my nearest town. You are more than welcome to join us.

I find the same thing with Stephen King, not all his books are great but the majority are. I do like to find a new author, like Ken Follett (as seen on Oprah)called 'The Pillars of The Earth' I think you'd enjoy it.

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Hi! Yes it is called 'Between Silk and Cyanide'. I work in IT in information security so I thought it would be good as it's sort of about the birth of encryption. I am so glad you have read it - did you notice there are loads of typing errors in the text and is it relevant?!! I think I should have noted them down from the start as I am convinced it is a message in code!! Am I mad?

I fancy going to Bletchley Park now - there is a visitor centre there. Have you been?

Hello Jade - I would be interested in the book club. I can't do Tuesdays or some Thursdays though. I have always fancied the idea and read a lot!

I am reading Wessex tales. A Thomas Hardy I missed as a teenager and I am loving it. All the better because my YS is reading it too.
Haven't got my head round Steven King

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Hiya Lady - have you read 'Two on a Tower'? I hadn't and it was in a holiday cottage we stayed in last year so I read it. It's really lovely - Hardy at his best. BTW, did you read the biog of Hardy that was a bestseller a couple of years ago, I think it was by the same lady who did Pepys, Claire Tomalin - it is a good read.

I am reading Vince Flynn "Extreme Measures. I also love books by Clive Cussler, Nelson de MIlle, but most of the books I read are either crime thrillers or Spy type books. I read DS and BTB when I want to escape to fantasy land.

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Hi - good to be on board the book club. I'm reading The Lollipop Shoes by Joanne Harris. It's the follow-up to Chocolat and its a good "curl up by the fire" read. Really interesting female characters and you immediately feel you are in Paris and can really visualise the chocolate shop. I love the way she conjures up the "magic" which seems to suit a chocolaterie - so appealing but a little dangerous too!
She tells a great tale - has anyone else been seduced?

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Hi Libraryann
It's some time since I read "Chocolat" but yes I can remember being seduced by the book. I've not read The "Lollipop Shoes" but I did go on to read "Blackberry Wine" and "Five Segments of an Orange" and enjoyed both of those.
Thanks to the rest of you I have now added the 2 Thomas Hardy books and "Between Silk and Cyanide" to my list of "to read books" which grows ever longer!!!!
Think I might get my Dad that "Between Silk and Cyanide" for my his birthday.
I'm reading "Mr Pip" by Lloyd Jones very different read but I'm liking it so far.Billie

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Thanks Sha for my next two books. I have read neither but I have been to Thomas Hardy's cottage it was just lovely. We are big fans of Dorset and whenever we go I always feel very Tess of the D'Urbervilles like OH finds me very embarrassing

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Reading Jodi Picoult's a Change of Heart. It's readable but the religious aspect is a bit much and the story is predictable. Have just received Kate Atkinson's Case Histories from my book club and am looking forward to starting that.

Re: What are you reading at the moment?

Hi Splash

Joanna Trollope is normally a sure fire cert for a good book. Let me know if it is up to standard as I haven't read that one yet. I have just started When will there by good news by Kate Atkinson and am hooked. I have always loved her books as they are quite quirky - she always take a different slant in writing to anything that has gone before.Even though I normally find it hard to read books which focus on different characters in details before connecting them up this one is a pure joy to read.
