Have any of you bookworms read C J Sansom's Matthew Shardlake books? Matthew Shardlake is a hunch-backed Tudor lawyer who is used by Henry VIII's 'people' to solve murders, mysteries etc. Actually, he is much more than that, but simplistic explanations only from me! My historian daughter put me on to Shardlake, the Tudors are her period, and she enjoys the opportunity for the much lighter read of these and similar novels. Have just ordered the fourth one in the series - it should be waiting for me when I go to the UK next week. Unfortunately, this part of Spain is a book lovers desert. Would appreciate comments.

Hi Pidge I have read the first 3 and they are brilliant, the 4th one has just come out in paperback, so I plan to pick it up later. Funily enough I didn't get on with a Winter in Madrid which is set in the spanish civil war. I think it's one of the best historical series out there at the moment. I like the fact that they read as though they are very realistic - right down to the torture in the tower in the 3rd book. Enjoy the 4th one when you get it |

Hi Jennifer, I didn't get on with Winter in Madrid either, tried and tried, and will possibly have another got next week when in the UK staying at my daughter's, if she hasn't passed it on to someone else. Can't wait for the fourth Matthew Shardlake, have ordered online and it should be waiting for me - hopefully. Will probably have to fight my daughter off though, she is bound to have started reading it! Glad that someone else on the forum likes one of my favourite authors. Cheers Pidge

Hi Pidge I picked up the 4th one the other day, I've only had the chance to read a couple of chapters, and it is looking very good already. I won't give anything away though, but you should enjoy it. Have a good time when you visit your daughter |

I had to join in this conversation. Am nearing the end of Shardlakes third outing and loving it as much as Dissolution and Dark Fire. The descriptions of York at the time are amazing and as a frequent visitor to the city will be looking at the old city walls in a new light. Have bought Winter in Madrid so sorry to hear that it does not live up!! |

Hi Northernlass Welcome to the Forum. I enjoyed all the Shardlake books, the 4th on is even better, but if you have read the first 3 you are already hooked and are planning to buy the 4th. I'm not sure what the problem with winter in madrid is, ransome draws his charecters really well and in Madrid, I found I just didn't care about them. I wonder if Winter in Madrid was his first novel and it just didn't hit the mark. Have a good day |

Hi Jeniferpl On to my last few pages of book 3. Will be heading to borders for number 4. I have just ordered The Gift from Amazon at a great price. It was recommended by forum members so watch this space. I am also a great fan of Kate Moss, the historical background to both Labrynth and Sepulcre are both accurate and compelling. Thankyou for the welcome. |

Hi Northernlass You must have started book 4 by now, how are you enjoying it? I have speulcre on the book case and may have labrynth - OH buys as many books as I do, so I shall give them a try. Let me know how you get on with the Gift. I'm reading the first casulaty by Ben Elton, it's started off a bit slow, I hope it picks up, I have a short attention span, so it's in danger of being abandond! Hope you are having a good day |
