Book Club in Glasgow?

Hi, is anyone aware of any book clubs in the Glasgow area? Or would anyone like to help me start one? I am 40 years old and have just moved from Canada. It would be great to meet some like-minded people who enjoy reading. Please drop me a line!

Hi welcome to Scotland - I don't know of any book clubs in Glasgow - I tried to find one when I moved up from england - we could always bounce around our thoughts ideas etc on books via email until we find abook club and even one day start our own.

Hi. I had put a post on for anyone interested in a book club in Lanarkshire as I live in Bothwell. So far just one other lady and myself trying to arrange to meet up.

i would be interested in the Glasgow club if you are having any meetings. I am a total novice to book clubs but as I love to read (time permitting !) I thought a book club would help me widen my choice of material and also meet some like minded people for chat and coffee.

Hi there

It looks like a Glasgow/Lanarkshire book club may be starting this weekend !

A few of us are meeting up for the first time this Saturday at the Borders bookstore at the Fort shopping centre at 2pm in the coffee area.

I will be there early and have a copy of W&H on the table for easy identification (saves wandering around eyeing every one else up - do they look like they like to read ?)

Hope you can come along but if not we will hopefully be continuing to meet up regularly so perhaps see you at next meeting.

Well the Glasgow/Lanarkshire book club had their first meeting at the weekend and everyone enjoyed an hour or so settling in chatting about how to take the club forward - how to select the books, where to meet etc. as well as getting to know each other.

We have selected 2 books (1 classic and 1 current) to feedback on at our next meeting which will be Saturday 15th November at 1pm.

As the coffee shops within book stores can be quite noisy we have opted to try the Black Bear (at the old Glasgow Zoo) for our next meeting as they have a lounge area where we can have coffee and cake to sustain us through our chatting session ! The Black Bear is just off the M74 so easy to access from both Glasgow and Lanarkshire. If you need directions just drop me a line.

Everyone is welcome to join us at our next meeting and here are the titles of our currect selection -

Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte

Hello to all the Glasgow Book Club members,

I hope you are enjoying the chosen books. For me it's "one down, one to go" and a nice respite from my uni coursework!

Since we won't be meeting at Borders at our next get- together, I thought I might suggest that everyone bring a classic and contemporary title for consideration for December's meeting and hopefully we can come up with a unanimous decision.

I wiIl go along a bit earlier to try to get a cosy area or booth. I haven't had much chance to look around at other book selections over the last week or so as work is calling night, noon and morning just now ! But will try to gather some ideas before Saturday.

Hi everyone.

Firstly, apologies I am not going to be able to make Saturday, but look forward to the learning what the new books are and the date - presumably in January.

Secondly, I was wondering what everyone thought about possibly having some questions to think about, if available, for future discussions. Just so we all think about similar things and then can go off at tangents thereafter.

Thirdly, of the last two books I really enjoyed the Tenant of Wildfell Hall but didn't really think it was that feminist. She was still very hide bound by social niceties other than leaving her husband. I am struggling with Suite Francaise though - it is just not floating my boat - but I will try to finish it and not do my usual trick.

For next time we could do an Austin and as far a contemporary is concerned I would choose Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist.

Sorry again that I will miss Saturday and look forward to seeing you soon.

Sorry to hear we won't be seeing you on Saturday Janey. In the meantime, I agree very much with your comments. While I managed to finish "Suite Francaise", I did have difficulty keeping the various characters' storylines straight, and "Wildfeld" was not a feminist read whatsoever!

I am so glad you suggested an Austen book for next meeting as she is one of the classic authors I was going to propose. I would love to read "Persuasion", as I've already read "P&P" and "Emma" and found "Mansfield" to be her slowest going. I also have heard good things about "The Alchemist" so am happy with that suggestion, but look forward to hearing what the others have to say.

Hello again everyone,

Well, today's meeting was rather sparsely attended but Lynda and I had a great chat and mutually agreed up the following titles for next month's meeting:

Classic title: "Persuasion" by Jane Austen
Contemp. title: "The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox" by Maggie O'Farrell

We also set the next meeting for Saturday, 20 December at the Black Bear Restaurant as a combination Chrismas lunch and book discussion so come with an appetite for both! We have reserved a table in the dining room for 1:00pm and look forward to see as many of you there as possible. And once again come with some possible titles for January's meeting.

My apologies to everyone for being mislaid by plumbers on Saturday and I am so looking forward to the festive meeting on the 20th.

Both books look interesting and I will be off to Borders this weekend to stock up. I note you both had mentioned The Alchemist - I have picked that book up a few times now but have selected something else instead so would be interested in this book being considered for future reading.

Is your team not playing on the 20th ? My ex-husband was talking about taking a friend down to watch Sunderland v ?? on the 20th. He was a bit bewildered that I knew someone who supported Sunderland - probably thinking it was a new man (and I just let him ha ha)

Will confess that as yet I have not made a start on either of the books selected due to various household disasters and actually cleaning the silly place pre christmas tree and glittery things !

However Sunday will be my day of rest, cups of tea and my nose in a good book. Not sure which one to start first but will see where my thoughts lead me on the day.

Hi Cathy,

I suppose you could always rent "Persuasion" to get the jist of the book if you haven't already read it. I recommend the 1995 version starring Amanda Root if you haven't already seen it as it's truer to the book. Maggie O'Farrell should prove a relatively fast read so perhaps you should start with that one - especially as I personally think the subject will promote some good discussion.

Hi all,

December's meeting decided on "The Mayor of Casterbridge" by Thomas Hardy for our classic pick and "The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox" by Maggie O'Farrell (again) for January as with the holiday rush most of us didn't manage to finish it in time!

We are still looking for a few more keen readers to fill out our group, so why not make it your New Year's Resolution to join a book club?

Our next meeting will be at 1pm on 31st January at the Black Bear Beefeater / Premier Inn on Hamilton Road in Uddington. We're a VERY informal group and would love to welcome you! Feel free to show up or else send me a private message for further details.

Hi everyone

Just a quick line to wish everyone a very happy New Year for 2009 and here's to happy book reading (with a little glass of wine since its the festive season ?)

I throughly enjoyed our christmas lunch and it was so good to share our thoughts on the books we had read.

Good discussions, good books and new friends - what a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

For anyone who is thinking about coming along but not sure what to expect at a book club why not just come along and find out for yourself. Stay for 5 minutes or as long as you feel comfortable. As moviemaven said it is all very informal and very very friendly.
