Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

Wow I have just finished reading this book. What a ripping yarn. Fantastic. I really couldn't put it down - thats probably why I have finished it so soon and this post is early. The plot was absorbing and the writing very descriptive. Barcelona came alive for me and I really could smell those smells and viualise those scenes. My favorite characters: Fermin - for the comedy Fumero - for being so completely nasty . I did have an inkling who the stranger was when I first started the book but dismissed it as I read further and the plot became more complicated. Like wheels within wheels. The atmosphere of the book was so intense at times the slightest noise and I would jump out of my skin. Thankyou for choosing this book I would certainly read another by the same author. This story will stay with me for some time. One of the best books for a long time Wow (again). I appreciate some of you might not have finished the book yet and I hope I have'nt given anything away in this post.

Re: Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

I am the person that chose this book for this month's read but it has been a while since I read it and cannot remember enough detail to write a review.
It was recommended to a friend of mine by her 30 something'ish brother who loved it so much she recommeneded it to me. (We are both 40 year old Mums). I then recommended it to my 18 year old son who said it was the best book he had ever read. So I could see that it was a book that could be enjoyed by both sexes and of all ages which is why I made it my choice for the book club.
I do remember being caught up in the story from the very start and I can't tell you PP how delighted I am that you obviously feel the same way about this book.
Let's hope your great review will encourage more people to pick it up and give it a go!

Re: Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

I am in the middle of this book having been lent it by a friend. I am enjoying it but as I have been really busy lately I have been reading a little at a time over quite a long time! I think it would be better if I had read it when on hols and could read it all of a piece if you know what I mean!. Your post has spurred me on to finish it. I agree it is a cracking tale and it certainly brings Barcelona alive. I have a son who lives in Barcelona and I have visited several times and I feel the discriptions are excellent. I had not realised this book was this months choice for the Eyes Down Club. I was saying to Nannyconnie just last night I always seem to be reading the wrong book at the wrong time for the Group. Now I am on track !! I will finish The Shadow Of the Wind soon and let you know my thoughts then. Thanks for the review.

Re: Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

At last I have managed to catch up with the rest of the group on account of the fact that I have already read this book! I first came across 'Shadow of the Wind' as an audio book and enjoyed it so much that I subsequently went on to read the book. The fact that I already knew the story didn't detract from my enjoyment of reading the book at all since there were many details which I had forgotten ( also the audio book had been abridged). I think it was one of the most atmospheric books that I have ever read and the story was full of twists, turns and suprises. I would like to know a bit more about the author and where he got his inspiration for the story in particular the idea for the Library of Lost Books.

Re: Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

I agree,I have read many books this year and I can honestly say it was one of my favourites. The twists, and setting of Barcelona was brilliant. I shall look out for more from this author, excellent choice. If you have not read it yet, then I recommend The book Thief I found it along the same lines.

Re: Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

Wow, lots of Early Birds posting. A great reflection Juliejug of a fab choice. I too like others had already read the book, and have been eager to post! I thought the writing gave vivid descriptions of people and places, and enjoyed the twists.
Daniel's curiosity about Carax, the author of his "chosen" book, allows this book to have many styles: mystery, suspense, humour and a little make believe.
I think it won't be long before someone tries to produce it as a film (although in my mind, they're never as good as the books)
I'd never heard of Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and I'll certainly look out for more of his work.

Re: Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

Hi Girls
I read this book a long while ago and thoroughly enjoyed it! I have got it sitting on my shelf ready to reread but don't seem to be able to get round to it! ( so much to read it's untrue sometimes) Anyway I did enjoy it , I thought I might try and see if I could get as an audio book from the library then I could listen whilst doing the housework. Will write a review if I can Billie

I too read this book a while ago and really enjoyed it once I got into it. Just going to pick it up from the library to reread it to refresh my memory. Will hopefully be posting a proper review in a week or so!

Re: Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

Well I seem to be the only one not able to catch up -----so many books so little time.I'm afraid I still haven't finished this book yet,not because I dont like it,I am loving it,but am just about half way through.

Will try and get back with some sort of review later in the week, but meanwhile ,thanks for the choice ,not a book or author I knew at all.Back to the settee with said book and a coffee.

Re: Shadow of the Wind - Eyes Down

I read this book some time ago and loved it, but found I couldn't remember the story afterwards.
I'm reading "Night Train to Lisbon" at the moment, which is also a book about books and find it absorbing.
