Arrived in London but lost the removal van...

Hi everyone

Well at last I am a beginner Londoner! Despite the best efforts of our removal men. Really, would you load up a van with someone's belongings and set off to London without a map?? OK, they had SatNav but it's sooo dodgy!

Fortunately, at the last minute I'd suggested swapping mobile numbers, which meant we could have conversations like:

" Where are you dear.. we're outside your flat but we can't see you.."

" No, you're not outside our flat ..WE'RE outside our flat but you're not here! "

" Yes we are..."

Having established where they were, and that they were never going to get to us unaided, my OH ordered them to stay where they were and set off to find them .. everyone a bit hot and tired by this point!

To be fair, they then toiled up and down three flights of stairs with great good humour and we got there in the end, as you do. And we love it!

Now all I need is some new friends in London, so watch out for postings on supper clubs, book clubs, walking clubs... hope to meet some of you soon!

Re: Arrived in London but lost the removal van...

I wish you all the best in London. I really like London and was there on Wednesday as my OH had a meeting. It was slightly hot to say the least but I had a fab time. It's a mad place - everyone rushing everywhere on foot or by car, motorbike etc, etc. My memory will be sitting on a boat on the Thames with the London Eye in front of me set against a brilliant blue sky and drinking a large glass of vino!

Good luck.

Welcome to London (my birth city) Mags.

Did you pass your belongings on the M1? We did when we moved once - frightening. They had to have an overnight stay somewhere and I had visions of all our wordly goods being stolen.

Sounds as though you are in! (with the odd hiccup)

Welcome to London, where all my family was born, still have a sister living there.

Lived and worked there until 22 years ago, sons both still work in central London.

Dont know what part you are living in but sure you will soon settle down. Central London is always busy and I still love the buzz... I am in London most months. So much to do. Enjoy .

Welcome to London, Scottishmags,
I live in south london and came here many moons ago as a student. The train up to London Bridge only takes about 12 minutes so I am close to central london as well.
Hope you've had a good evening and look forward to hearing how you're doing.
Cecilia

Hi, Scottishmags,
Glad the move went relatively smoothly and you are settling in.. As for the Sat Nav versus map thing, my OH had a period when he refused to look at a map and relied only on the Sat Nav. Needless to say the Sat Nav has now been put away somewhere and we are back to the old-fashioned way. At least a map doesn't keep telling you to make illegal U-turns or to go the wrong way up a one way street.

Welcome to London Mags - furniture and all!

When you are settled, let me know and we can have that cuppa. My schedule is a bit mad for the next fortnight, but after that I'd love to meet in person. There's a meet in Hyde Park on 1 August (look out for Summer's posts), so that might be a good time to find some friends.

Love

Hi and welcome to London from me in south London. Yes, London is mad, frantic and crowded, but I love it too! I'm about 15 mins away from the centre by train.

Hope you settle in soon and get to meet some of us. We are a friendly bunch down south, despite our reputation to the contrary!

Re: Arrived in London but lost the removal van...

Hi everyone and thanks so much for your good wishes

Unfortunately I'm not around for the picnic in Hyde Park as I'll be on holiday in France then, but I am definitely going to keep in touch and find a way to meet up soon; looking forward to it!

Re: Arrived in London but lost the removal van...

Hi Mags, hope everything is settling down and you are happy. Foxie, I know that sometimes the south gets a reputation for not being friendly, but that has never been my experience, from hotel staff to shop assistants to, well, everyone I have always found lots of people willing to help and chat, so thanks all Londoners! Am coming down In August to take the D's to Dirty Dancing, we are excited already.
