Magazines - give us a break!!!!

Hi
Would any of you, like me, love to pick up a magazine that doesn't have a diet in it? I am so fed up with being told how to drop a dress size, get into my little black dress (if I had one), detox, get more energy, lose my cellulite, get into my bikini (now thats funny) etc. Along side these interminable lists of what not to eat and what you are not allowed are my other pet hate - weight loss stories. They always follow the same format.
First there will be a before picture taken when the person was wearing their most unflattering outfit and taken from the worst possible angle. Then an after picture were they look toned and svelte even though they must have stretch marks and loose skin after their dramatic weight loss. We then get the story of how they 'ballooned'to a size 16, always the word ballooned, how they were afraid to go out the door, wore tents and - OMG - elasticated waists. We are then told how they ate 6 bacon butties for breakfast, pie and chips for lunch, fish and chips for tea and a chinese carryout for supper. They also ate packets of biscuits at a sitting and multi packs of crisps all washed down by lashing and lashing of ginger beer (or coke).
By now all of us over size 16 are feeling very bad, what with our balloon like figures, our tents and our elastic waists. We are beginning to think we should lock ourselves away for the good of mankind as we must be frightenening children every time we go out. We are also wondering if we are over eating in our sleep because we have never knowingly eaten a whole packet of biscuits in one go, stuffed our gobs with fries and carry outs and always drink water or diet coke.
Now and again a magazine will take pity on us chubby chops and add a 16+ feature or style a few balloons but further into the same magazine they will be discussing Victoria Beckhams cellulite (!!!!!!!) and offering yet another diet.
I was watching a programme on RTE (Irish station) recently where they had the editor of a magazine that has a 'no diet' policy - what bliss! Its not that I am against weight loss - I lost a lot of weight myself in recent years - but I dont want to be bombarded by diet advice when the space could be used for something more interesting.
I also object to the tone of these weight loss stories - they inevitably make the more ample amoung us feel bad - if these are womens magazines for women surely they should not do that - we have enough to make us feel bad without other women doing the same.
Having been a serial dieter almost all my life I can say with total certainty that if I had never dieted I would never have got to the size I did. Now I am trying to develop a normal relationship with food that has nothing to do with a diet.
I think we should vote with our money - don't buy a magazine that says it contains another miracle diet - and start a campaign for magazines that make us feel good about ourselves no matter what size we are.We are woman we are invincible!

Re: Magazines - give us a break!!!!

I couldn't agree more! I'm sick of every magazine I open having diets in it, every forum I've seen full of dieting, switch on the TV and it's diets, switch on the radio and it's diets! Being on a diet oneself is dull enough, hearing about other people's diets is mind numbing!

There is so much pressure on women to look a certain way (fine if it's for health reasons ... if one is obese, one is at risk) ... but this image bullying is really trying. I think it really belittes womens' self confidence and self image .. and the fact that many of the top bods at these magazines are women makes it all the more sad.

I no longer read a lot of magazines. If they fill their pages with unobtainable images I won't buy it. And if they focus on celebrities on an "off day" (otherwise known as normal life!) and make a big deal about a spot, or a bit of cellulite, then I'll think "shame on you" and stop buying it.

We have the power - it's right in our wallets and purses. If we stop buying magazines and newspapers that fill their pages (and therefore our heads) with rubbish, then they'll have to stop and think twice about their lazy journalism. Sadly, I fear that will not happen any time soon ... too many people want to look at pictures of celebrities going shopping and having lunch with their mates.

Re: Magazines - give us a break!!!!

Bonnieblooming, Duffy, and LadyWillow,

We are what you are, its up to us really, if we feel we are too big, and unhealthy, then I think we owe it to ourselves to do something about it, but it doesnt really help any person who has always had weight problems to have it thrussed in their face every five minutes. I like to think I keep healthy, I swim, and walk as much as I can, but have always had to be careful about what I eat as the weight just seems to pile on if I go a bit mad. I lost three stone with Slimming World, and then went on holiday, and put a load back on again.

Im taking on board LadyWillow, your suggestion about just simply not buying the magazines that promote constant dieting all the time. Plasmo x

Totally agree BB,Its just the same old thing week in & week out...It puts me off buying them...I also cant stand it when they report that a celeb has dropped to a certain size like say a size12 when they are obviously at least 2sizes bigger...take Vanessa Feltz for instance, she may have lost loads of weight when her husband left her but she was never a size 12...

Re: Magazines - give us a break!!!!

Oh how I agree. I know I am overweight.I dont need anybody to tell me - and I am certainly not going to be influenced by Victoria Beckham. I think she looks dreadful. Her new ' chest' makes her look as if she has two melons sticking out from the top of the dress. She is not a very good role model for all these youngsters out there. If I had a daughter of an impresionable age I would worry about her reading these magazines these days.

I think I will ban all reading matter that includes diets. I will live my life doing the things I love. If I manage to lose weight it will be a bonus.

Good luck to all of us who are over a size 14

Excuse any errors. Just bought a new keyboard ! !

Re: Magazines - give us a break!!!!

totally agree I want my magazine for light relief (pardon the pun) I know my size and how to change it, when and if I am ready to, and then I'll look for information. I firmly believe that only way is more out (exercise) less in (food).

I dislike just as much large t.v. presenters in need of a good overhaul who tell us about diets and fashion.

Re: Magazines - give us a break!!!!

true words indeed!
I never ever these days buy magazines to read about all those diet stories. BORING! BORING! BORING!
as if we donīt KNOW ALREADY that itīs good to loose some weight for health reasons, if one is very overweight.
Any way the thing is, and this is a fact, you CAN be a bit plump AND very healthy, having a few extra kilos doesnīt necessarily mean that youīre going to keel over tomorrow.
what is it with these people? I read a nasty piece about Nigellaīs bum. Excuse me? surely she is a very beatiful lady, why be nasty?
as soon as anyone famous puts alittle weight on itīs flaunted all over the tabloids. it makes me angry. I work in a school now, since appr 2years,and just during this short time Iīve come across young girls in their teens with eating disorders! and one boy!
I blame all those magazines!
Iīm plump myself, and I like me this way. so there.

Re: Magazines - give us a break!!!!

I completely agree with you Bonnieblooming. I absolutely avoid any diet magazines and take no notice of diet "tips". On the other hand I fully support those who are in the forum diet club because they are in a process of retraining their minds to never diet again but to eat food as when they need it. Being overweight makes us all miserable and there is a huge industry making money out of it.

Re: Magazines - give us a break!!!!

Totally agree Bonnie, I'm quite a big lady and although i would like to loose a bit of weight for health reasons i have no desire to be less than a size 14/16 - i like food and i think Nigella Lawson is alot more attractive to men than Victoria Beckham. It never ceases to amaze me how these magazines can feature diets on one page and people with eating disorders on the next. A lovely girl i knew recently died at the age of 42 following years of annorexia related health problems - she had damaged most of her internal organs through starving herself.
My OH would rather have me plump and happy than stick thin and miserable.

Re: Magazines - give us a break!!!!

The other day I found myself browsing a diet mag whilst eating a large cookie! I still like to read the success stories though! Good for them!

I am a fan of Nigella - she is not stick thin and she has flair with her food. Can't say the same about Delia though - I feel she has lost her way.

My pet hate is airbrushing. I don't want to buy a fantasy magasine - I want to see the real thing please!!!
