Malcesine is great and if you are a walker has the benefit of Mount Baldo which you can to up in a lift and plenty of walks and cycle tracks up the top (skiing in the winter) I had a great holiday the and have the name of a relatively cheap apartment which was lovely and had magnificent views (from your bed) across the lake. let me know if you are interested and will give you details.
