OH and I escaped without the children for 3 nights in Bruges (went by eurostar) Brilliant time, very easy and relaxing, everyone spoke English (as being the most common language for all the tourists)
Very pretty town, loads of walking, very interesting museums. Felt very safe and would encourage arty teenagers to visit alone as a 1st adventure!
