In the end I gave up and either went back to my old hairdresser in Cambridge or into London to Trevor Sorbie. However, just before I moved up to Shropshire I went over the river (to the dark side..

) and Lakeside. The Regis hairdressers in House of Fraser had a really good decent stylist - think he was called Tony. Very 60's retro - ex Vidal Sassoon... brilliant cut. No idea whether he is still there, but worth a punt.
