I'm an 'underactive' as well, but have coped really well since I've been on the tablets - too many years to remember! I first thought I was going through an early menopause, so the doc took bloods and found out it was the thyroid. So once that got sorted, the 'change' came a few years later, but I sailed through that with HRT for 5 years. The doc didn't tell me when she put me on that it would just delay the symptoms! However, I am coping with gradually reducing hot flushes - I think it helps to have the thyroxin tablets to even things out a bit. So, don't worry - just keep popping those little pills and you'll soon feel better.
