I think you are spot on with this. I'm no prude either, I stand on the football terraces and chant with the blokes, but feel the old saying time and place are appropriate here. Even if people swear in their normal lives, we still need to remember some people find it offensive and respect that. Anyway I think filling the gaps in words with asterisks has a bit more oomph.
