I think that's a really good idea.

Have you come across a great website called "librarything" which does exactly that? You put in a list of your own favourite books, giving them a score out of 5, and putting them in a category eg "Victorian, crime" or"19th century, India" .. and it matches you up with people who like the same books, and lets you look at their lists of favourite books, so you can find lots of new ideas for what to read. I'm not explaining this very well, but it's worth just googling and having a look. And it's free!

I like Sarah Waters, and ended up being led to Michael Collins' books which I've bought for reading on holiday. I also read loads of novels set on the Indian sub-continent, and I've come across some new authors there too.

Here's a suggestion for people who like crime fiction:

If you like Henning Mankell's books (Wallander) , you'll like " The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson.
