I think it's a good thing to care to some degree about what other people think. I don't mean that you should subsume your personality to fit, rather that sometimes it's part of society that we present a way of being in order to make it easier to interact with various situations and people whose thoughts, attitudes, customs are different to ours. It's when you spend your time with friends and family denying your true self that huge problems occur.
