Can I just use you good ladies as a straw poll to find out if an idea I have for a fund-raising stall at a coffee morning would be a good idea or not.
In the Thread about hair products, Need2Know mentioned that she has, just like I have, a cupboard full of various nice brand stuff that I've lashed out on, only to use a couple of times and find that they're just not doing what I hoped they might, (eg anti-frizz conditioning and styling products, new fragrance that doesn't smell so great on me as it did in the bottle!).
If I had a collection of things like this, would you buy them if you came across them on a stall, or is this a cuckoo idea? It just seems so wasteful to simply chuck them out, and I know, talking to other mums, that they have made purchase errors too, so I'm sure I could gather up a reasonable collection to sell.

Personally that would not be something I would want to buy, though I agree that we all probably have a big collection of stuff that we will never use. I tend to give such things away to girlfriends to try out. I also keep a big basket in the bathroom for guests in case they've left something at home. Maybe you could get a group of girlies round to your house one evening with their collections and a bottle or two, and agree to swap or sell for minimal amounts? I would certainly be happier to see the person that had tried it out and would find it helpful to know what they were expecting the product to do and why it didn't work for them.
It's amazing how many products I've thought were useless but girlfriends cannot live without!

Hi twinsmum, I wouldn't buy either. My fear would be that the product had either been contaminated or gone 'off'. The 'swap'n'sell' idea amongst friends sounds a good idea.

Wouldn't it still be contaminated if you sold it to friends?!!!!
...but I suppose you could trust your friends not to have deliberately added some untoward ingredient to it......or could you!! 
Imagine ......hair removal cream in the conditioner,body hair in the shower gel...yeuch!!

lol Blossom, you are funny, I have to agree with the other girls too, swap amongst friend is fine by me, but I wouldnt buy anything that is already open.
OH was horrified that there was a bottle of perfume on sale on e-bay , that had been opened, I know some perfumes smell like wee, but you could never be sure could you!!!

I too, wouldn't be happy to buy. To be honest, if someone offered to sell me something that had already been opened, I'd be a bit taken a back.
Swapping or giving away, no problem. If any of you girls have a Jo Malone Perfume you no longer want.....!

I personally would not buy second hand products. I would be concerned by how old they were and whether they had been stored correctly.

Surely the perfume on ebay was new wasnt it?
I buy brand new products on ebay all the time but would never buy used products

I agree with you - I wouldn't buy anything that had been opened either, but people do at car boot sales - I've seen them!
I'm not just talking about perfume and hair products - I've seen private sellers selling mascaras and eye shadows that have obviously been opened and tried.

Part-used hair and beauty products? Never happens.
I've got a daughter and a sister and we swap anything that doesn't suit us, or we're fed up with.
I'm currently using a fantastic blusher my sister bought and didn't like, and I'm also trying out some dermatologica moisturiser she gave me. Even though my daughter is a hairdresser, she can't resist trying all my hair products. And my sister loves visiting us, because she says it's toiletry heaven.
Sis and I also share clothes, it's just a shame my daughetr is so tiny and we can't raid her wardrobe.

Well if the item beloned to friends or family it would not be so bad but to use a product that had been used by someone you didnt know is unhygenic eeeuuuuuuughhhhh

I've seen loads of part used toiletries for sale on ebay - there seems to be plenty of people daft enough to buy them!
I'm not so sure part used items would sell, but I do give my Mom any unopened items (unwanted gifts for freebies) which she either keeps or uses on the church bring and buy stall!

Thanks very much for all your comments - this is what the Forum is good at: helpful info and a ready-made consumer study group!!
I shall ditch that idea - but just to put the record straight, in case anyone was thinking I meant to put pots of creams and things like that which people had put their grubby fingers into already - I certainly didn't, and only intended things like hair products maybe used once or twice.
Back to the drawing board!

no, I would not buy used products, for hygienic reasons, fear of contamination and not knowing the time or how the product had been stored.
I think the idea of sharing amongst friends is an excellent idea, a few products, bottles of wine and a great reason for a party.

When I first read this I thought no, I wouldn't buy from a stall. But then I realised I buy and sell the same things on ebay without a qualm. Usually people, me included, have bought the wrong shade, don't like the smell, effect etc, used it once and don't want to lose quite a lot of money. So list them on ebay instead!
