Today I walked two miles on my own!!! Not a marathon, but...
      #110935 - 06/05/2008 11:33

it's the furthest I've walked since last July when my knees gave up on me, so that for a few days I couldn't walk at all. and I also developed very bad sciatica. Since then, I've gradually been building my walking up, but I've been very nervous about going out on my own because it sometimes feels as though my legs are just going to buckle under me, and sometimes the pain is very severe.

However, I've been exercising a lot, had some acupuncture and bought a support belt (which looks dreadful, but feels sooo supporting and comforting on my back), and today, my little dog and I went out in the sun and I did it!!!

A great achievement! Well done Valaber! Hope you'll be able to keep going now that you've made such a brilliant 'leap to freedom'. A dog is both a great incentive and a worthy companion too!

Well done. It's just making that first effort and I'm sure you feel better for it. I must say I always find numerous things to do instead of walking, since I no longer have a dog. Who wants to walk a marathon anyway? 2 miles every day soon mounts up.

That fabulous news! and good for you,I don't know your age,(and I'm not asking!!)but I just wish that somebody had been able to motivate my dad following his hip op,but sadly not,and so for years now he has virtually just sat in a chair . I know he is in his eighties, but as a one time long distance walker,I think it is so sad that he lost his confidence that much that now just to walk across the road is an effort.
Keep going,Val,you'll be an inspiration to many . Hope to see you down my way soon. It's beautiful here, the bluebells look and smell gorgeous .

Well done valaber! I fell last year and my knee hasn't been right since - I am gradually building up my walking but have had to stop running and cycling (that sounds very fit and active but I only run a small amount). So good luck, valaber and let us know how you progress :-)

Thanks eveerybody - it was thinking of putting it on the forum that kept me going (that and the bench for a sit down half way!)
annemari, I'm a lot younger than your Dad - never thought I'd be disabled in my 50s - but it is confidence that's the biggest problem so I feel for him. Perhaps he could just manage a little walk around the garden?

Well done, I know the effort involved and am very pleased you made it. I try and go a little further or a little faster each day and it does work. Keep it up.

Well done, valaber, two miles a day means you'll have walked the equivalent of a marathon in under a fortnight!!

Talking of marathons, aren't they called snickers now?

Well done valaber. You have probably walked more in one day than most people do in a week. You should be both pleased and proud of yourself.

Good for you Val. I've been having probs with my knee too (the ligament was trapped in the joint)and the only way is to keep moving. I'm impressed with your 2 miles - haven't gone that far yet.
