Lily Beetles
      #114992 - 14/05/2008 17:45

I am the Lily nit nurse!!
My lovely flowers to be are plagued by these beautiful but destructive red beetles and I have to be out there every day poking through the leaves to pick them off and squash them.
Is anyone else having problems with them this year?

What other pests do you have in your garden - apart from the noisy neighbours!!!!

Yes I do. They arrived last year and ate all my lilies, leaving piles of little gungy bits on the leaves and flowers. I noticed them earlier last month as the lilies grew. I can't keep up with them.
Any solutions gratefully received!

My Mum goes out evening evening round her garden and squashes the little blighters 'tween finger and thumb!
She keeps a mental tally! So far this year it's something like 47, last years grand total was in the hundreds I believe. Now personally I believe life is too short etc.. and especially if you are a beetle in her garden.
She is an organic gardener so no pesticides allowed only murder at the hands of a seventy year old psychopath!
I believe her trick is speed because they are very sensitive and if they feel the plant shaking first they have an automatic response to drop off the plant onto the ground for safety and then when you're not looking sneak back for more munchies.

OMG, I think I've just turned into my mother. Surely it cant be right for person to know this much about lily beetles?
J.

Our garden is mostly shrubs and lawn, so no problem with the beetles, but slugs! Everywhere! Horrible things - can't walk anywhere in the garden without having to look down the whole time. Same problem last year too, but prior to that, can't remember them being around much?

I have lots of snails and I squish them all! I am providing food for all the garden birds.
