and my faith in human nature has never been so low. I never thought that trying to sell our house would mean that I would be treated to meet such dishonest and lousy people. Why don't people say what they mean and mean what they say ?
I can't go into details because I'm too depressed, but I would truely like to say if you're trying to sell your house in the Cotswolds or Cirencester please PM, and I can give you the name of the dishonest couple who have tried to fleece us, maybe it can save you the same heartache.

Sorry to hear you have been treated badly.Selling our house was one of the most stressful things I have ever done.It really brings out the worst in people. You can never tell wht they thnk , or what their motives are. Some people play all sorts of games to get the price down, including threatening to pull out at the very last minute, unless the price is dropped...terrible behaviour!!...and don't get me started on estate agents!!!

Hi Betty, I am sorry that you have had such a bad time - selling your house is hard enough without people behaving so badly. Would it help you to write down what happened (you don't have to anme them) just to get it off your chest?

Hi Betty sorry you are having such a bad time trying to sell. Before coming to live here the only experience I had had with buying and selling was in Scotland, so differrent. I could not belive the English system. Hope you get a great offer soon .

Whitleybay - I'm with you on the English system and until the powers that be get stuck in and change things, it will remain the minefield of frustrations and anxiety that it is right now. In SA if you put pen to paper your are legally bound which makes for quick and efficient sales which are far less stress free than in England.

It is a nightmare, and I sympathise with you. We have just had a wasted 3 months of a purchaser saying he is ready to buy, hassling us along, and then it turns out he can't get a mortgage in the present climate....and he has backed out. Don;pt know who is worse, buyer or estate agent, and either way we are out of pocket with legal fees etc, and left with property onthe market going into winter which is not best time anyway, let alone in current climate..... The whole system needs overhauling, it is chaos, expensive and unfair. Hope you get lucky with another sale for your house.

LegallyBlonde,
Dont want to dampen your spirits, but we have had our house on the market for 3 YEARS, I am not joking.
I could write a book, we have had people asking us to drop the price by £20,000, people asking if all the furniture is included, let down on numerous occasions, people just not turning up, families viewing the house, diverting into different rooms, the list goes on.
We had a viewer on the 11th told us they were more than keen, havent heard a word since.
It is so disheartening, and I totally understand how you are feeling, because I feel exactly the same.
What should happen is, when someone makes an appt to view a house, a deposit should be made, and then they might just think twice before they mess people about.
GOOD LUCK
Plasmo x

Yes Plasmo .... the deposit certainly sorts out the time wasters - in SA its a 10% deposit. We sold a flat last year (before the crunch) and when I asked for a 10% deposit, the agent advised the buyer against it, even though I agreed to take the flat off the market and not to entertain any further viewings so that the buyer could not be gazumped (sp - such an odd word!)
A week before completion the buyer pulled out for no other reason that they changed their minds - the upshot for us was a legal bill of £975.00 - thanks mate!

So sorry to know you are going through this Betty. House buying and selling really does seem to attract the most dreadful people. My cousin has just been through a similar thing.
Don't give up hope on the human race though! it will work out for you in the end.

I know that the times are such that selling a house or flat is nigh on impossible but there are still buyers out there. My OH and I have bought and sold many flats and houses over the years, including our present house which was sold a few weeks ago. The only piece of advice I can give, which I think works, is not to stand still. Every week that your property remains unsold do something to improve it. De-clutter, repair, paint up scruffy areas. Our lovely home went on the market with lots of interest but no offers. Bit by bit we got a decorator to "tart up" flaky window frames and cracks in the ceilings. Our dark kitchen was painted cream and new handles put on the units, the bedrooms were smartened up, the garden gate was repaired, I put window boxes outside, and most of all, we maintained the garden and the inside of the house so that it always looked welcoming. Also, it pays to keep yourself smart too so that people think smart people like to live this way. Of course, this only matters in the end if you actually have a potential buyer to look at your place.
