Hi.. my eldest daughter, middle child, nearly 28, has schizophrenia...... are there any other W&H readers in the same boat as me who could do with some support too or feel the need to talk about it? Joy

Hi Joy, welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your daughter. I'm not in the same position as you, but I was wondering if your daughter has been recently diagnosed?
Is this something new to you?

I caught the end of a programme on BBC the other night on this topic (sorry, can't remember what it was called) - it was presented by Dr Tanya Byron (?) the woman who does The House of Tiny Tearaways. If it's repeated it's well worth watching, I was fascinated and the whole point of the programme was comparing religious fervour with mental illness - is hearing a calling the same as hearing voices - there was one really inspiring man on there who hears several voices all the time, one in particular is destructive and offensive but he's learnt to control them and he now helps run help groups for others like him. He came across as a really nice normal bloke. It was really interesting that many of the people with this condition who appeared in the programme started hearing voices after experiencing personal loss - the voices they heard were often family members.
Sorry I can't remember the name of the programme, you might be able to get some details from the BBC website - good luck, stay strong and fingers crossed that you get the help you need. xx

Hi Joy and welcome! I don't have experience of schizophrenia but my eldest son, 35, is bipolar. I'd be quite willing to talk or listen if it would help you. Please feel free to PM me

I used to work with a man with schizophrenia and the really sad thing is the image that is portrayed of people with schizophrenia as being axe weilding maniacs who need locking up 24 / 7.Nothing could be further from the truth.People with schizophrenia ( and other mental illnesses ) are more likely to be the victims of violent crime than the perpetrators (sp). The man I worked with was a gentle giant. He heard voices and had lots of different strategies to help him.One was the use of a walkman, so that when he felt the need to "answer" these voices it just looked like he was singing along to the music.Different things work for different people. As someone said earlier, MIND have some really good fact sheets.
Good luck!

Hi JoyBelles
Welcome to the forum first and foremost. I have no experience of schizophrenia but I have an understanding of depression. There is a book I can recommend which covers all types of mental health problems. The book is by Dr Pamela Stephenson Connolly and is called Head Case - treat yourself to better mental health . It has a section dedicated to schizophrenia and recommends other books on the subject.
It is a very informative read - I appreciate it is not the same as speaking to someone, but it may help you.
Take care x

Hi Jane Thank you for your welcome. Louise has been given several diagnosis over the years but schizophrenia is the latest and which probably fits the picture the best. It feels scarey!

Hi Joybelles, I’m sure your daughter’s diagnosis has come as a shock to you and I am wondering what support, if any, you have been offered by your GP? Are you the prime carer for your daughter? It’s important that you make sure you have support for yourself. You may have a lot of quite difficult emotions to cope with on top of worries about your daughter. Is your GP able to offer the support you need? Or has he put you in touch with a local support group in your area?
I’m glad that you joined the forum as we have lots of lovely ladies on here that will offer you support and a listening ear whenever you need it. You are not alone. Jane X

Hi Joybelles, My much loved 32 yr old stepdaughter K has a bipolar disorder with schizoid tendencies so I can imagine what you're feeling. From my experience schizophrenia is just a label - its symptoms/outcome differ. And the diagnosis is often given when all that is known is that there is a chemical imbalance in the brain.Given that your daughter's diagnosis comes so late (at 28)this would seem to be the case From K's experiences with the medical system I'd advise that it's vital to get the medication right. Some medications cause overweight/lethargy etc and dull the personality.Always check the internet to find out as much as you can re the drugs/s prescribed and don't be afraid to question the treatment.
After some bad spells K now is well, happy and with a lovely 4 yr old. She has a supportive partner, takes her medication and avoids getting stressed. She doesn't work but has in the past.
I hope your daughter gets the treatment and support she needs to keep well but obviously she has a loving family and in K's case that made all the difference. Big hugs to you both.

HI i just want to say thank you so much to you all for your kind and supportive words! And for the welcomes to the forum. I was overwhelmed to see how many responses I received....You have all given me such a lift. I suddenly don't feel quite so alone in all this. I have contacted MIND and RETHINK and am on to Amazon tomorrow for Pamela Stephensons book. I would be very happy to share support with anyone who is in my situation. Thanks again for being such lovely, caring, thoughtful and supportive 'friends'. Joy

Hi Joy, if you specifically want to talk to other parents who are in a smilar situation to you. You might want to try the following link:
http://www.rethink.org/applications/discussion/?site=1
I've just had a look and there seem to be some really good discussion forums on there.
Don't forget about the ladies on the W&H forum though, as this is a very friendly site and you will find plenty of support here should you need it.
By the way, I did think www.schizophrenia.com also looked good, but my security software said I couldn't trust the website!
Good luck.

Hi Jane I have looked at the RETHINK site a few tmes in the past..it is very good but i hadn't realised they had a forum. I have just registered on it so thank you very much for that. I will check the other site out too. I have only visited this forum at W&H so far and yes....so much friendliness! It's lovely!
Best wishes Joy
