Bertie, May and Mrs Fish by Xandra Bingley
      12/07/2008 15:59

In this easy-to-read memoir, Bingley does a good job of showing how even the landed classes had to make do and mend during the second world war. The unusual fragmented nature of remembered conversations enhances the atmosphere while reminding us that it is more than sixty years since her story began and memories aren’t so clear. This is the story of a family coping in difficult times but, sadly, showing that peace didn’t bring happiness for Bertie, May and Mrs Fish
