I have just finished reading 'The Book Thief' and what a read!!! I couldn't put it down and managed to read it in a very short time, it blew me away. I loved the way it is narrated by death himself but more importantly it highlights the fact that if we Brits think we had it hard (and I know I didn't live thru it but it must have been incredibly tough for everyone and I respect anyone who lived thru it) then the ordinary German people had it doubly hard!
We tend to be taught the war years history at schools as a very black and white issue of Brits and Yanks = Goodies and all Germans = Baddies and that is how most films and books portray it so how refreshing for someone to tell it thru the eyes of an innocent German girl, someone we can instantly sympathise with no matter what nationality.
I think this book should definitely be on the syllabus for GCSE!
cheers,

Thank you, Dgt3...I've picked this book up and put it down several times but now I'll certainly give it a go...

sounds interesting.... and I agree with your goody/baddy thing, thats exactly how it is portrayed, there are always innocent victims on both sides and propoganda conveniently distorts that reality.
might even give it a read myself! kaz

The best book I have read this year is 'Friday's Child' by Ben Palmer.
It is a true story, well-written and a real tear-jerker.
I highly recommend it.

I agree with dgt3 I loved this book, am now reading The shadow of the wind - another excellent book. I love these real long novels, and am on the look out for more.

My first post
I read the book thief last year. I am an avid reader and canīt afford to keep up with my passion....so I rely on pass on books. This is one I have passed on to my mum and daughter....I am hoping they enjoy it as much as I did. I get really excited when I read a truly good book and like you I couldn't put it down and when I finished it I wished I hadn't, as I really missed it.

I have also just read 'The Book Thief' and was completely riveted! it was so moving by it's simplicity and unique descriptions. Not and 'easy read' but so worthwhile!

I have it on my to read list and you've just inspired me to dig it out again!
I've read loads of brilliant books this year! The Thirteenth Tale was a really good one but also discovered new authors like Martina Cole

Hi dgt3 The Book Thief sounds a really good read. I am going to look out for it on my rounds - I usually get my books from charity shops. I am lucky where I live as we have an older population so books turn round quickly. I have just read Shadow of the Wind which was a really good read. Thanks for your recommendation. PPatie

I too loved both The Book Thief (which my two teenage daughters also enjoyed) and Shadow of the Wind (which was recommended to me by a complete stranger in a bookshop when I was looking for a birthday present for my husband).
Another of my all time favourites is The Kite Runner, I didn't think 1000 Splendid Suns was quite as good although I did find it quite shocking.
