After reading the prologue I decided this was not my sort of book and a picture of Tom Hanj#ks in Forest Gump sprang to mind. In fact I could hear Tom hank's voice inside my head as Perry during the first few chapters. I was soooo! WRONG Tom Hank's voice disappeared and Perry began to take on his own voice and personality. The story was delightful and took me just over 24hrs to read. All the characters were well written in the story. I especially liked Keith who looked out for Perry. It was easy to read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. thanks to Emerald for the recommendation. Look forward to hearing what everyone thinks. Realized I posted in the wrong place this morning ooops!

Thanks Billie. When I started reading it, after I'd already suggested it, thought "oh no, it's not for me!" But then really enjoyed it. I thought it was cleverly written, and loved bits like the "cousin-brothers". I'm also happy it was a "light read" as when the weather was fine, could pick it up, for a 10 minute escape in the garden, and not loose the thread of the story.

I went along to our local book shop which is very small as I live in the country but they are quite good in that they can order books for you. I didn't know what the book was about so the lady in the shop let me read the description. I thought it sounded good so i thought I would read it. The cost however was £14 for the paperback. So I have joined the local library and have requested it from there. My local library doesn't have a copy but they will get one for me from one of the other libraries in the area which may well be from one of the Scottish Islands. So I am eagerly awaiting the book and will read it and give a review when I finish. By the time I do all of this we might all be into the Sept choice. Which makes me think I may as well see about getting it organised as well.

I knew nothing about this book and picked it up from my local library last week. When I read the synopsis I thought it didn't sound very promising. But like Billie I was proved wrong! I really enjoyed it -there was lots of humour, the characters were well drawn and believable. It was easy to pick up and put down but I found I wanted to know what happened to Perry and got through it very quickly!
Would recommend it to others to read -it's different but enjoyable - looking at the world through Perry's eyes made for interesting reading and makes you think about how we maybe perceive others who may be a bit less intelligent than us. Actually his observations and 'takes' on people and situations were very clever I thought. All in all another good choice and a book I would otherwise have missed!

I'm disappointed that only 3 of us have posted thoughts on this month's book. Does this mean that no-one else has read it? What a pity as I enjoy reading what other forumers think of a book. Maybe all the regular contributors are on holiday!

That's ok nannyconnie -really wasn't getting at anyone!!!! Don't want to cause offence -just thought that normally more people read and give opinions! Realise that not everyone can read every book - and this one was hard to get , I had to wait ages for it!

Hi all ,I too had trouble getting this book. It arrived last week, the cover says it was shortlisted for the Orange Book Prize. I am only eight chapters in at the mo. I do have to admit I am not enjoying the read, but hopefully the storyline will pick up.

I have just received a copy of this book via bookmooch so will try and read it before too long. When I've finished it will probably go back on bookmooch so if anyone wants it you can visit their website.

Hi all, I finished reading Lottery a few days ago. I was pleasantly surprised after chapter 6 as Perry wins the lottery after his gram has died. It was a bit obvious that he was going to have the money taken by his grasping family, but it was the friends Cherry and Keith his 'other' family that warmed my heart. I did enjoy the book even tho I took some time to get used to Perry's voice in my head. He became a 'businessman' and achieved self worth which was more than any lottery prize could do. So I shall never judge a book by its cover - in more ways then one.

I also had problems getting this book. However I realy loved it and I have given it to my daughter to read. It was easy to read and I really got caught up in it. I think Per was a much nicer person and wiser than a lot of people in the book, certainly his own family. I loved the way his friends took care of him and ultimately he ended up with a family of his own. Also he realised what was important in life, his friends and loved ones. Thoroughly recommend this read.

As promised here is my contribution albeit rather late. I thought this was a lovely read. Billie's initial thoughts about Perry being similar to Forrest Gump were quite apt, I thought. Incidentally, I read Forrest Gump several years ago and it is very different to the movie. Anyway, The Lottery was a heart-warming tale, although a bit superficial. I couldn't help falling for Perry's charms.
