REVELATION C J Sansom
Revelation is the fourth historical novel in the Shardlake series but it can be enjoyed as a stand alone novel too.
The setting is London in 1543; King Henry VIII wants to make Lady Catherine Parr his sixth wife. As the struggle for power between religious reformers and reactionaries continues, new laws mean arrest and punishment for many citizens. In an atmosphere already heavy with suspicion a serial killer is on the loose. Shardlake becomes involved when a close friend is found dead; with his assistant Barak he follows the trail of horrific murders which imitate the dark prophecies of the Book of Revelation. Opinions about the murderer vary – is he possessed or is he insane? As he edges closer to his final target, his daring and cunning almost defy belief. This novel has a brilliant plot, a rich variety of characters and a shocking conclusion – a very exciting book.

Hi JDM
I have read all the shardlake books so far and this is next on my list, I usually wait for the paperbacks, but this one may just be worth getting in hardback. Thanks for the review

Yes I've been waiting for the paperback too, not really got enough room for hardbacks.

Hi Psyche
That's exactly why I buy paperbacks - that and hardbacks are just too heavy on the train!

haven't read any of these books yet but someone was recommending them at book group today! Have read another book by CJ Sansom called Winter in Madrid which I quite enjoyed, set in Spain, during the war.

The hardback of Revelation (452 pages) was on sale in Borders at £7.99 and I couldn't resist. However, it was certainly very heavy and awkward to read in bed!
I enjoyed Winter in Madrid too. C J Sansom is a great storyteller (and also, I am told, a very nice man – a friend of mine studied with him at Birmingham University!).

What makes C J Sansom tick? There is an interesting article about C J Sansom in the latest issue of Waterstone’s Books Quarterly. This magazine is free if you spend £20 on books or if you have a loyalty card.

I've just finished Winter in Madrid. It was the first Sansom I've read and will certainly be reading more. I really enjoyed Winter and now want to go visit Madrid. My interest in the civil war has been thoroughly stirred.

Hi Millstrood,
Thanks for your response - your first post, I notice. Welcome! I understand what you mean about Winter in Madrid making you want to know more about the Spanish Civil War. To educate myself I borrowed a school text book from a friend who is a History teacher!
Hope you enjoy C J Sansom’s other books.
