if nobody speaks of remarkable things - jon mcgregor
      #148658 - 13/07/2008 20:23

Has anyone read this. Half way through and getting a bit frustrated that I don't know what it's all about although I do think the writing's good. Any comments?

Poppyc - This is a "story" in the poetic sense of the private lives of people living in an urban street in England, throughout a single day.

There is a twist plus tragedy involved in this book, but to say anymore would spoil a very enjoyable novel for the future reader.

Keep going and enjoy.

I read this earlier in the year but can't remember much about it ... but I did read it so I think that says something. Hope you enjoy it!

Hi everyone,

This book was the Eyes Down Book Club choice last month. If you look at the thread - Eyes Down June Review - you will find several comments.

Thanks everyone. I knew I'd seen it reviewed somewhere. I've now reread the reviews apart from the one that revealed the ending (kept my eyes closed as I saw that one). I agree his prose is lyrical. Living in the centre of Edinburgh, as I do, I love his description of the city 'singing' - so true. Very unusual book but glad I'm reading it.

Poppyc - I loved this book, This is one of those books that if ever I had thought I could write a novel then just the opening paragraphs of If Nobody Speaks would make me acknowledge that I had no hope of ever writing as beautifully as that! I hope you enjoy it too!

Hi everyone - have just finished the book (should be working!). The prose is wonderful but please could someone PM me with how they interpreted the end. I say PM because I'd hate to spoil it for anyone else. I agree this would have been a wonderful book to write but I for one couldn't match the lyricism of the prose. Thanks in anticipation.
