Eyes Down Review for July - Half of a Yellow Sun
      #147794 - 12/07/2008 09:01

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

If you enjoy a book with intelligence and passion;one that resonates with emotional truth, then this is the book for you.
Set in the 1960's during the Nigeria-Baifra war, we meet Ugwu, a boy from a poor village, who works as a houseboy for university lecturer Olanna and her lover.Olanna's twin sister is in love with a shy Englishman, Richard.
Through the entwined lives of the five central characters we gain an insight into the culture of the middle classes at that time, contrasting with that of the poor villagers.
As the war engulfs them, their loyalties and ability to forgive are severely tested.

Half of a Yellow sun urges us not to forget the history of this land and its people.
Adichie has written a literary masterpiece.

Am just coming to the end of this book and I must say it feels like it's losing it's way now and I'll be glad to finish it. Shame as I was really into the first half. Can't agree that it's a masterpiece but it is a very thought provoking and interesting book about something I knew little about.
