Camping and caravanning breaks
Fancy a UK holiday? Hit the open road for a true sense of freedom
Just a few years ago, the idea of camping or caravanning would have been met with giggles and sneers, but how times have changed! Last year you couldn't get into Glastonbury for campervans and their American equivalent, the Winnebago – and life doesn't get much cooler than that.
Us Brits have woken up to the idea of being sophisticated snails and carrying our home around with us, especially now that you can equip that motorhome with every amenity from SatNav to TV to state-of-the-art barbecues (they've had fridges, showers, loos and cookers for decades).
You can take your pets, and what you get, above all, is freedom – freedom to hit the road or stay in that wonderful, secluded caravan park with a wood and a lake just to read, swim and relax.
There are now some 1,400 caravan parks throughout the country – some tiny and secluded, others with their own pools, spas, golf courses and family entertainment.
Want to give it a go?
Visit www.campervans.com, which offers access to companies throughout the UK and pick-up points in 39 cities. They will even find a secure place to leave your own car while you hit the road.
Prices start from around £800 per week for a six-berth affair with unlimited mileage.
