Writing tips

Want to be a writer? Best-selling author Cathy Kelly offers her tips…
Before you type the first word
Make sure you have something to write about that you feel passionate about. Lack of passion for your subject will kill it stone dead.
Be yourself when you write
Don't try to channel in Joanna Trollope or Saki or anyone else – that never works. Write from your authentic self, as insincerity shows so obviously.
Do plan your book or short story
Plan in broad strokes – if it's working, the characters will take over and direct the action – but you need focus.
Write as often as you can
Writing has a rhythm and if you haven't written a word for a month, it will take a lot longer to get into it.
If you're naturally self-critical
As many creative people are, don't let your inner critical voice take over. That voice may tell you it's rubbish, but someone else will tell you it's brilliant.
Keep at it!
Don't be discouraged. Just think about the day you type "The end" and the incredible sense of accomplishment you will feel.
