Our tips for finding the perfect jeans to fit your body shape
The 1970s – a time of clackers, rock music and experimental fashion. And the must-worn item in most women’s wardrobes during that time? Levi’s 505 jeans.
These comfortable, easy to wear jeans were completely different to anything we’d worn before: a lower rise, more relaxed fit and a lived-in look made them seriously covetable. Favoured by Debbie Harry and The Ramones, and even seen on the front cover of Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album, they’re synonoymous with the 70s New York music scene, and full of nostaglic memories.
So, with the news that the 505 jeans are now available again, as the 505c, we’re revisiting our jeans collection to find the few pairs that make us feel fabulous – and we can help you to find your ideal fit, too…

Best for: All body shapes
They were a 1970s fashion favourite for a reason, and now the Levi’s 505 jeans are back, with a remastered and modernised take on the classic design. Ripped detailing – a perennial fashion favourite – was pioneered on the 505s, so it comes as no surprise to find that the collection features plenty of worn-in and distressed detailing.
The ‘C’ stands for customised, so also look out for a new slim-fit leg and stomach-flattening zipper. Karyn Hillman, Levi’s brand Chief Product Officer, says: “The 505 was a symbol of counter-culture. It rose to fame during an era of unrivaled creativity in art and music. We’re excited to introduce a modern and slimmer take on this classic. It’s equally and subversively sexy on both men and women.”
The slim fit, mid-rise waist and range of colours mean these jeans work on any shape. With fashion’s leading trendspotters falling over their feet to pick up a pair now, it won’t be long before we’re chanelling the 70s again…
Best for: Athletic body shapes
If you have an athletic or boyish figure and you want to accentuate curves, go for a pair of boyfriend jeans with slouchier thighs. Pair with a boho blouse and wedges for summer, and a cosy jumper and ankle boots in the colder months.
Best for: Pear body shapes
you have wider hips and you want to flaunt your figure but don’t feel
comfortable in super-skinny jeans, then a cigarette style is perfect for
you. The fitted leg on cigarette jeans will balance out your curves,
without drawing attention to any lumps or bumps. Why not experiment with a new shade for summer? White is versatile, and makes a refreshing change from classic indigo denim.
Best for: Tall body shapes
If you’ve got long legs, flaunt them! A high rise pair of jeans will emphasise your lengthy pins, while wearing a flare adds proportion and curve to your body. If you are looking to shorten your appearance, try a low-rise style instead.
We’ll style these jeans with a white blouse and brown wedges for an effortless daytime look, and glam them up with a chiffon top and some peep toes for an evening out.
Flared jeans, £195, Paige Denim
Best for: Hourglass body shapes
If you’ve got a curvy
figure, higher-rise jeans will
accentuate your smaller waist, while a skinny fit will emphasise your
fabulous hips. Black is also a flattering colour for all shapes. This pair come with a hidden support panel to make you feel fabulous.
Best for: Petite body shapes
As a petite woman, you’re often told to ‘lengthen’ your legs with the jeans you wear, but we say embrace your shape with cuffed ankles. This functional pair will flatter your legs without being too skinny, as they come in a relaxed, almost straight-leg style. The horizontal lines around the pockets, and the pattern detail on the bottom, will also enhance your natural curves.
Best for: Apple body shapes
If you’re apple-shaped, then a straight-legged pair of trousers are the perfect fit to flatter your figure. The straight leg shows off your assets without being too clingy, and the lower rise is a good choice if you don’t want to draw attention to your middle.
This classic-coloured, faded pair works well for casual every day wear; pair them with everything from ballet flats to a par of wellies while walking the dog.
Straight jeans, £44.95, GAP
Best for: Busty body shapes
A cool pair of embroidered
jeans are the style to be seen in this summer. We love this straight-leg cut, which will balance out
proportions on those with a bustier figure. Style these jeans with an edgy biker jacket, or soften the look with a white linen shirt.
