Summer dresses are a wardrobe staple for any woman during the warm summer months of the year. Whether it’s the throw-on work wear wonder that keeps you cool at your desk on even the warmest of days, or the reliable ready-to-wear summer dresses that are brilliant for back garden barbeques or sunny Sundays in the park.
However, finding the perfect summer dresses for your wardrobe can be a difficult task to say the least. With hemlines that creep ever shorter, fabrics that are sheerer in real life than they looked in the photo and sleeveless dresses that only suit a small range of bust sizes, finding summer dresses to suit your style can be a challenge.
We asked fashion editors to divulge where they buy their summer staples, and to share their insider hints and tips to finding that perfect dress that you’ll wear for summers to come…
Julia May Morgan, Fashion Director at Woman & Home Magazine says:
“Look for unusual labels your friends won’t be wearing…. Finery, Uterque and Claudie Pierlot always tick the trend box… then style it your way.
“Switch up your belt, and add eye-catching accessories. This summer is all about oversized earrings. Go big or go home! Be confident and go for it.” Oakbury Drape Back Dress, £69 by Finery London
Harriet Walker, Fashion Editor at The Times says:
“Some of my most long-lasting summer dresses have also been the cheapest – I tend to pick up plain jersey T-shirt styles or shifts from H&M and & Other Stories every year, because they’re so easy to throw on at the weekend and to wear over bikinis on holiday.
“If I’m feeling more formal, I have an indigo broderie dress by Sea NY that is loose-fitting but feels relatively smart, and last summer I bought a button-front denim shirtdress from MIH jeans that I wore practically every day.”
Kath Brown, Fashion Director at Woman Magazine says:
“Usually the issue with summer dresses on the high street is that they’re too short. But luckily this season there are lots of gorgeous midi dresses around – there are great ones in Zara, Top Shop and Mango.
