Transforming your spare room in 2013

Do you have a spare room in your house that's left collecting dust and cobwebs? You've never quite got round to decorating it because you've never quite decided what you want it to be.

If you can relate to this situation, why not make 2013 the year to transform the spare room!? Not only will it give you another functioning room but it can also help you to stop hoarding all the unused ‘household treasures,' or if you're being totally honest with yourself, junk that you can't bear to throw away.

Although you are, of course, one in a million and totally unique, if you're struggling for ideas on what to turn your spare room into it might be time to categorise yourself. It's likely you'll get the most use out of a room that suits your lifestyle.

The workaholic

Of course you need a home office, I mean at least then you can come home and continue to work rather than being the last person left lonely in the office. The key with the home office is making it a comfortable space where you actually want to spend your time. It needs to be inviting! If it's the coldest room of the house (no prizes for guessing why it's the spare room) buy an electric heater to warm up the room, decorate in neutral, calming colours and invest in a comfy computer chair.

The fitness freak

What's the point in paying to go to the gym when you could have one at home? Ok, so this option only really works if you have the budget to kit the room out with equipment. It doesn't really qualify as a home gym if you just have a skipping rope in the corner and a single pair of weights to lift but, if you do have the budget you can save yourself time and money in the long term.

Family focused

Would you be able to consider transforming your spare room into anything else other than a playroom? It might restrict your enjoyment slightly but it's great for keeping all the child orientated activities in one room and can help keep the other rooms in your house all the tidier for it. As opposed to the cold issue a damp room may also put you off using it particularly if you've got kids in there, buy a dehumidifier from and create a healthy airborne environment for your little cherubs.

The Bachelor

It's all about the games room! Again you need to have the budget to kit it out with a pool table, a portable bar and maybe even an arcade games machine to make it somewhere friends will want to spend time with you.

The Bachelorette

It's all about the dressing room! Think floor to ceiling mirrors, enough wardrobe space to warrant several 2013 shopping sprees and a dressing table fit for a queen. Decorate in a suitably girly fashion but just make sure you get the lighting right so you don't end up going out looking like something out of Snog, Marry, Avoid.
