Sue's blog: Freezer food

Friday 11th April 2008

What's stocked in your freezer? It sounds like a new reality TV programme doesn't it. It may sound trivial with a credit crisis going on, house prices falling and fuel prices going through the roof, but the fact is that week after week we just stuff things into ours. Why? In case World War 3 begins and you need to have extra rations, or to save on the food bill for a week or so? I'm not sure why we do it, but I do know that we need to do a freezer-declutter and eat what is already in there.

Mine isn't full of ready meals, that's not our thing, but there is a very eclectic mix in there. There are frozen peas (not a problem), then six packs of pastry just in case I make that tart or pie one day. Or there's the cheesecake or two bought by my husband because they were on special offer!

I know that having a well-stocked freezer is back in fashion, but you need to look at the use-by dates. As they say, nothing lasts forever, particularly in the foodie world.

Anyway, the other night I decided (or rather my husband decided) that we had to start eating out of the freezer. I was telling a girlfriend this and she said, "We've being doing that and we ate the strangest combinations." So I'm not looking forward to this weekend's meals! However, I am looking forward to our very special lunch with Delia.

That reminds me of another conversation I was having with a girlfriend who was asking me about our Delia lunch. She is a really good mate of mine, so I've decided to treat her to the lunch for her birthday. I know it's going to be a fabulous day.

Delia has chosen each course and will be overseeing the meal. It's a delicious menu with lots of local produce plus dishes with real Mediterranean flavours. Then for dessert, there will be a wonderful chocolate ricotta cheesecake.

Delia will be joining us for lunch so you can have a chat with her. She will be signing your book (which is included in the lunch price), plus you'll get a great goodie bag to take home with you. My friend will love it - she'll have a wonderful lunch, a signed book and a goodie bag!

I hope to see you there too, maybe with a friend or two...

Have a good weekend.

Sue
