Walking clubs: The Ribbon Walks
Breast Cancer Care Ribbon Walk
Sarah Bellringer, 48, lives in Surrey with her husband John, 53, and her two children, Edward, 16, and Alexander, 12. She works part-time at her husband’s dental practice.
“I’ve always loved walking, but when my regular walking partner went back to work full-time, I found it lonely going on my own. I read about the online forum clubs in woman&home and thought it would be a great way to meet other walking fans and make new friends.
I posted on the Walking Club forum to ask if anyone in the area wanted to go for a walk with me, and had responses from four women. It was lovely to meet like-minded women and to have new people to chat to. We all got on very well and discovered that we have similar family situations and shopping tastes – and of course we all have walking and woman&home in common.
One member of the group, Lisa, told me in February that she’d signed up to do the ten-mile w&h Ribbon Walk at Blenheim Palace with eight other forumers, and suggested I join them. My aunt died of breast cancer 20 years ago and two of my friends are currently in remission, so I wanted to do the walk for them.
Sally, another forumer who is not part of our walking group, has organised the whole thing, so I sent her a message on the forum to ask if I could join. We met for a coffee and got on very well, so I knew the day of the walk would be fun.
The forums have totally changed my life – and this Ribbon Walk is a case in point. The forums have given me the confidence to meet new people and to realise that I can do things outside of the family.”
