What happened at the forum members' gathering in Manchester?

Laura, 48, who has two sons and a daughter, lives in Stockport, Cheshire. Her online forum name is Dizzy Blonde

“I joined the forums back in January 2008. I was keen to make some new female friends – I meet a lot of men through my hobby of football, but hardly any women!

Some women were starting up a Supper Club in my area, so I went to their first meeting in Cheadle, and met five women who have become close friends.

One of them, Patsy W, came with me to my first w&h forum meeting in Covent Garden last summer. Then all five of us went to York for the Forumfest in October. Everyone asked if we were going to organise a similar event in Manchester, so Patsy W and I decided to go for it.

We planned the day around a lunch at a bar. People came from all over the country – some came in groups with other people from their Supper Clubs, and some came on their own. There were women in their thirties and forties, and a couple of ladies in their late sixties. Some were in gorgeous dresses, some in suits and some in jeans.

We started with Champagne in the cocktail lounge, then moved on to a private room for lunch. Then some of the women went off shopping in Manchester, while others stayed in the cocktail lounge to chat. The fun went on right into the evening – I didn’t get home until 10pm.

We all got on so well that my particular Supper Club – Stockport and Sale – has been invited to get together with other clubs. Everyone at our event was asking when we were going to organise the next one, but Patsy and I have to check the football fixtures first – she’s a Manchester City fan, and I support United!

If the forum can bring us together, then it can do it for anyone. Our get together was a year to the day after I plucked up the courage to go to that first Supper Club meeting in Cheadle. Who’d have thought a year later I’d be having a party with all my virtual friends?”
