Sisters in the jewellery biz
Lesley (left) lives in Oxfordshire and runs Ladies Who Lunch with her sister Mandy Browne (right), and their friend Gillian Diggle.
Old job Lesley was an interior designer and Mandy was a full-time mum.
New job They make and sell jewellery.
“Our jewellery business is a perfect fit for my creative side and Mandy’s sales skills. Gillian and I make our own pieces, while Mandy manages our bought-in jewellery. I knew the basics from art college, but also went on a silver-smithing course, which cost £200.
The business started almost by accident. I was working as a freelance interior designer and I ordered some jewellery for a bedroom set at a show, but the designer let me down. Gillian and I bought beads and made a few pieces ourselves.
On the day of the show, it sold out in hours. From there, we began making jewellery for friends, and selling at fairs and home parties.
Around this time, Mandy held a party to showcase our work. She had a natural sales talent, so we asked her to join the team.
One of the ideas we came up with to ride out the recession is our Chic ’n’ Mix range. Customers pick different pendants and chains, with prices from £3.
We constantly strive to keep our jewellery unique and get inspiration from everything. I feel like I’ve found my calling.”
Start-up costs £300 to buy beads and basic equipment.
First year's turnover £5,000
Last year's turnover £80,000
Best move Launching our website in 2008 – it has made our business international.
Worst move Investing in a stall at an expensive gift fair. We hadn’t done any research and the target market was completely wrong.
Top tip Concentrate on the things you’re good at and outsource anything you're not.
