DVD: Biutiful

  • Karina Harris

Javier Bardem stars in the Oscar-nominated drama of an ordinary man trying to find redemption before death

Gritty, relentless, and powerful; Biutiful is not for those wanting a night of easy viewing. But, nonetheless, it is more than worthy of your attention - and its Bafta and Oscar nominations.

It follows Uxbal (Bardem), a single father struggling to raise his two children on a modest income and indulging in petty crime to make ends meat. He has a bi-polar and alcoholic ex, and has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer and given months to live. It's a race against time as he tries to get his life in order and provide for his children before succumbing to death.

Stunningly shot by Rodigo Prieto (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) and with sensitive portrayals from Bardem, Biutiful can't help but draw you in. It will tug on your heartstrings as you watch Uxbal work to make good his wrongs but sadly, he's too late for a happy ending.
