DVD: Fireflies in the Garden
With a star-studded line-up featuring Julia Roberts, Willem Dafoe, Ryan Reynolds, Emily Watson, and Ioan Gruffudd, this is a funny, intelligent, and moving portrayal of family relationships in the wake of crisis.
Fireflies in the Garden starts with novelist Michael Taylor (Ryan Reynolds) returning home for a family celebration. Instead of excited anticipation at the prospect of catching up with his loved ones, Taylor is worried about how his father - with whom he already shares a troubled and distant relationship - will react to news of a struggling marriage and failing career.
But his fears get waylaid he arrives to the news that his idolised mother has been killed in a car accident on her way to the party. Celebration turn to bereavement and, as he mourns the loss of his mother, Taylor faces the even greater challenge of overcoming years of heartache from a fractured childhood with his father.
This is a moving and affecting film on all accounts that will stay with you long after the final credits. An outstanding picture from an award-winning cast - definitely one that's not to be missed.
Out 28th September.
