DVD: Australia
If you’re looking for a night of passion, adventure, and intrigue then Australia, the latest release from Academy Award nominee Baz Luhrman, could be just what you’re after.
And, with a list of cinematic masterpieces to his name including Moulin Rouge and Romeo & Juliet, you can rest assured you’ll be in for a treat.
For those of you who missed the media frenzy that this film whipped up when it was first released in December last year, Australia is the tale of an English aristocratic widow (Nicole Kidman) who travels around the world to protect her husband’s cattle ranch from the backhanded competition.
En route she meets a handsome and daring drover (Hugh Jackman) and a young Aboriginal boy (Brandon Walters), both of whom steal her heart – albeit it in very different ways.
This is a heart-moving and inspirational story, which tells of a woman’s courage when she finds herself faced with an alien culture and the threat of war (the film is set in the Second World War).
Filmed on location, the scenery is breathtaking and, although at three hours it’s a lengthy view, it’s sheer escapism that shouldn’t be missed.
Out 27th April.
