DVD: The Young Victoria
Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria film
Spanning from 1836, just before the death of King William, to Victoria’s coronation in 1840, the film is an insightful depiction of the challenges the young queen faced after finding herself catapulted from a life of molly-coddling to her position as the country’s head.
It’s an enthralling depiction of the problems that come with having and wanting power, and with the associated issues of pursuing romantic relationships, in this case Victoria’s enduring love affair with Prince Albert.
The balance of romance, drama, and political intrigue is perfect; the attention to period detail so impeccable that you’ll be transported to another era. And the stunning backdrop of Lincoln Cathedral, Blenheim Palace, and Belvoir Castle, combined with convincing performances from actors like Jim Broadbent, Rupert Friend, and Paul Bettany are the icing on the cake.
