Theatre: Talent
When it comes to compassionate comedy, Victoria Wood can do no wrong. Since she made her debut in New Faces in 1974 she's won the hearts of a nation - as well as critics - and now has a string of impressive awards to her name.
Talent, which was first written and performed by Victoria Wood in 1978, is one of the works that has received particular acclaim and opened the world's eyes to her witty view of the world. It won her the Evening Standard's award for Most Promising Playwright and, after quickly being adapted for the TV screen, also gained recognition at the BAFTAs.
It tells the story of best friends Julie and Maureen. Julie is a contestant at a local talent show and is waiting backstage, with Maureen there for support, anticipating her performance. But with other acts in the wings including ukulele pensioners and a banjo-playing magician, there's plenty to keep her distracted from her spotlight moment.
Talent is a clever and hilarious comedy from the start and, with this revised production enjoying directorship from Victoria Wood herself, fans old and new are in for a real treat. Leanne Rowe (Oliver Twist), Suzie Toase (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), and Jeffrey Holland (Hi-de-Hi!) star.
Runs to 14th November at the Mernier Chocolate Factory, London
